Cold ceramic against her left cheek, slick with condensation that smelled of copper and wet chalk. The conduit ran the length of the crawlspace at an angle that wasn't quite level — nothing in the Reach was quite level — and Morri had her shoulder wedged against it, arm extended, the tap key held loosely between two fingers — loose grip, let the rod do the work. Loose grip. Let the rod do the work. You're listening, not striking.

She brought it down against the wall. A clean ring, bright and short, vibrating up through her knuckles and gone.

She shifted six inches to the right. The crawlspace ceiling pressed against the back of her skull, and she tilted her head to avoid scraping the same spot she'd scraped ten minutes ago. Her knees ached against the stone. The trace chalk on her fingers had gone from blue to yellow somewhere in the last quarter-hour, which meant the concentration was elevated but not critical, which meant she was close. Three fingers stained the color of old mustard. She'd be scrubbing that out for days.

The tap key came down again. Clean ring.

Above her, muffled through the floorboards and the ceramic conduit and whatever the merchant had stacked against the far wall, the Mercantile Quarter carried on with its afternoon. The rhythmic thump of something being loaded onto a cart. A voice she couldn't make out, raised in the cadence of someone negotiating a price they both knew was wrong. The sounds arrived as percussion and vibration, stripped of everything else.

She shifted another six inches. The mineral-damp smell thickened. A secondary note beneath it now, metallic and faintly acrid: the electrical tang of active thaumaturgy doing something it shouldn't be doing nearby. Her breath fogged in front of her, which was wrong for the season. She was close.

The resonance lens in her breast pocket dug into her ribs as she repositioned. A small, hard circle of glass and treated brass, pressing against bone. She had borrowed it from Carris three weeks ago. Borrowed was the word she used. Carris had been out of the office, and the lens had been on the second shelf of the shared supply cabinet, and Morri had needed it for a job that was going to take two days at most.

Three weeks.

She focused on the wall in front of her. The chalk residue on her fingertips caught the faint light from the access hatch behind her, yellow against the dark ceramic. She brought the tap key down.

Dull thud.

The sound was diagnostic right: she had found what she was looking for. The thud had no ring to it, no resonance. The wall was saturated. Spell-weight had pooled behind the ceramic, dense and heavy, pressing outward against infrastructure designed to contain a fraction of this load. She could feel it now that she knew where to look: a cold spot on the wall's surface, colder than the conduit against her cheek. The fault was here. The containment had given up after years of holding back pressure the original builders hadn't anticipated.

Morri set the tap key down on the stone beside her knee and reached into her coat. The pocket closest to her hip held binding strips — she found them by touch, the treated cloth slightly tacky between her fingers, pre-loaded with containment formulae that would hold for a few weeks if nobody did anything stupid in the vicinity. She peeled one free from the roll, pressed it flat against the cold spot on the wall, and smoothed it outward from the center with her thumb. The adhesive caught. The strip's edges curled slightly as the formulae engaged, a faint warmth blooming under her palm and then fading.

Temporary. The merchant would need someone to come back and do the real work — excavate the conduit section, replace the degraded containment layer, re-seal. That was a two-person job with proper equipment, not a solo diagnostic crawl with borrowed tools and chalk dust in her hair.

She checked the strip's edges. Firm. Sealed. The cold spot beneath it was already warming toward ambient. Good enough.

Morri began backing out. The crawlspace did not accommodate turning around — it barely accommodated being in it — so she reversed the way she'd come, knees and elbows, the tap key held between her teeth because she'd run out of free hands. The resonance lens shifted in her pocket as she moved, pressing against a different rib now, and she pressed her palms flat against the stone instead.

The access hatch was a square of grey light behind her. She reached it, got her shoulders through, and sat on the edge with her boots hanging into the crawlspace and the rest of her in the merchant's back storeroom. Dust motes turned in the light from a high window. Crates lined the walls, stacked with the aggressive optimism of someone who believed in vertical storage. The air was warmer out here, and it smelled of wood polish and the ordinary commerce of things being sold to people who wanted them.

She pulled the tap key from between her teeth and wiped it on her sleeve. Chalk dust had gotten into the grain of the wood. She'd clean it properly later.

The merchant appeared in the doorway. A thin man with an apron and the expression of someone who had been told there was a problem under his floor and was now waiting to learn how expensive it was going to be. He leaned in, hands gripping the doorframe on either side, and his eyes went to the open access hatch and then to Morri's chalk-stained fingers and then back to her face.

"Is it bad?"

Morri stood up, brushing chalk dust off her left sleeve with her right hand. A puff of yellow residue drifted into the light from the window and hung there, turning. "Binding strip for now," she said. "Don't stack anything heavy above it."

His gaze dropped to the floor as if he could see through it. "How long does that hold?"

"Few weeks. You'll want someone back for the permanent fix." She tucked the tap key into her coat pocket — the one on the right side, third down, where it lived alongside a folded reference sheet and something wrapped in cloth she hadn't identified. "I can leave you a name."

"Right." He nodded, still looking at the floor. "Right, yes. A name would be good."

She gave him one. Wrote it on the back of a receipt she found on his counter, along with a brief note about the fault location and the binding strip placement, because the next person in that crawlspace would want to know where to start. Professional courtesy. The merchant took the receipt and held it with both hands, reading it as though it contained more information than it did.

Morri turned back to the storeroom. She needed to collect her chalk case from beside the access hatch, and there was a crate she'd shifted on her way in that was now blocking the path to it. She gripped its edge and pulled it toward her, scraping it across the stone floor with a sound that set her teeth on edge.

The book slid off the top of the crate and landed open on the floor.

Slim volume. Scuffed cover, the color of dried mud, no title visible on the spine. It had been sitting on the crate's surface, probably wedged between the crate and the wall behind it, and her pulling the crate forward had dislodged it with the careless physics of objects that had been balanced rather than placed. It lay face-down and open on the stone, pages fanned, spine creased from being left open too many times.

Morri picked it up. The cover was cloth-bound, unremarkable, the kind of utilitarian binding the Edgewick Branch used for its reference circulation. She turned it over and opened it to the inside front page.

The branch stamp was there, centered and precise. Blue ink, the branch seal with its characteristic double border, and beneath it the date of last checkout.

Fourteen months ago.

Her jaw tightened. Fourteen months. The kind of delinquency that generated paperwork — a branch clerk pulling the original checkout record, cross-referencing it with the overdue register, sending a formal notice to an address that might not be current anymore, because the kind of person who kept a book for fourteen months was also the kind of person who moved without updating their library records.

She closed the book. Put it in her coat pocket, the left side, where it settled against the chalk case and the roll of unused binding strips with the quiet weight of something that had found a new place to be. The pocket absorbed it the way it absorbed everything — without acknowledgment that its contents now included a library book that did not belong to her.

She collected her chalk case, closed the access hatch, and left through the front of the shop.

The Mercantile Quarter opened around her in its late-afternoon configuration: merchants pulling awnings against the angle of the sun, carts navigating the narrow streets with the resigned patience of drivers who knew the streets had been designed for foot traffic and would never forgive the introduction of wheels. Brass tubing ran along the building facades in parallel lines, carrying thaumaturgic runoff to collection tanks mounted at the corners. The ceramic conduit she'd been pressed against minutes ago was part of the same system, the hidden infrastructure that kept the Reach's spell-weight from pooling in basements and doing interesting things to people's furniture.

The buildings leaned. They always leaned. The spell-weight pulled them earthward with a force the architects had never named, and over the decades the architecture had developed a collective slouch. Morri walked between them without noticing, the way she walked past everything in the Reach without noticing. You stopped seeing the lean after the first year. After the fifth, you started leaning with it.

Her route home took her through the edge of the Mercantile Quarter, down the long slope of Ferrier Street where the brass tubing thickened and the collection tanks grew larger, and into the Tangle.

The transition was not abrupt. The Mercantile Quarter didn't end so much as lose confidence, its orderly storefronts giving way to buildings that had been modified so many times they no longer resembled their original purpose. A bakery with a second floor that had become a glassblower's workshop. A former counting house whose ground floor was now a tea shop, its upper windows sealed with wax and emitting a faint violet light that nobody asked about. The brass tubing on the facades grew less uniform, supplemented by improvised additions in copper and tin, and the ceramic conduit sprouted junctions that hadn't been part of any municipal plan.

Then the vines. Pale green, threading along every surface that had been left unattended for more than a season. They colonized gutters and windowsills and the gaps between bricks, and in the early evening light they gave the Tangle's streets a soft underglow from below, patient. The fog was thicker here, tinted green and pale orange by alchemical vapors from workshops that operated on guild covenant rather than municipal license. In the alleys between buildings, where the fog pooled deepest, failed containment spells produced their characteristic soft glows — purples and cold blues, pooling in the low places like water made of light.

Morri moved through it without slowing. The Tangle was her route home, had been her route home for three years, and she navigated its irregular streets with the automatic confidence of repetition. The crowd thickened as the evening shift began — practitioners heading to workshops, couriers running late deliveries, a knot of people outside a tea shop engaged in the kind of argument that involved hand gestures and occasional sparks. She sidestepped a man carrying a crate that hummed and turned left onto Grieve Lane, where the buildings pressed close enough to block the sky.

The book was in her pocket. She could feel its weight against her hip, the slight rectangular pressure of it beside the chalk case. A library book. An overdue library book. She would return it to the Edgewick Branch, pay whatever fine had accumulated on someone else's account, and be done with it. That was the correct course of action. That was what a person who had strong opinions about library returns would do.

She took the book out.

The motion was automatic — the same compulsion that made her straighten misaligned spines on public shelves when she thought no one was watching. She opened it to the inside front page: Edgewick Branch, fourteen months overdue, standard reference circulation binding.

She flipped to close it, and the book fell open to a middle section. Not the beginning, not the end. A random page, chosen by the spine's memory of where it had been held open longest.

The margins were full.

Dense handwriting, cramped, filling every available space between the printed text and the edge of the page. Two ink colors — a dark brown that was almost black, and a reddish tone — a different pen, or the same one refilled with whatever was available. The annotations consumed the text they surrounded, running along the margins and curving around the corners of paragraphs, leaving no white space unclaimed.

Morri stopped walking.

Her head tilted slightly to the right. Her breathing slowed. The crowd in the Tangle moved around her, a woman with a crate on her shoulder adjusting her path without comment, a pair of couriers splitting to pass on either side.

The handwriting at the top of the page was neat. Controlled. The characters were formed with the regularity of someone who had been trained in a formal system and was applying it with care. She knew the shapes. Seven years at the Veldran Academy had burned them into her visual memory with the permanence of scar tissue: Academy cipher. The standard encoding taught to every student who passed through the archival methodology courses. Fixed substitution with positional modifiers, structured and consistent, recognizable by its evenness. Whoever had written the upper annotations had been trained the same way Morri had been trained. The same strokes, the same spacing conventions, the same methodical precision.

Halfway down the page, the handwriting changed.

The shift was visible as a crack in a wall. The Academy cipher's careful regularity gave way to something faster, more compressed, the characters losing their formal proportions and running together. The positional modifiers that gave Academy cipher its structure dropped away, replaced by abbreviations and personal shorthand that no longer followed any standardized system. The reddish ink appeared here, mixed with the dark brown, as though the writer had stopped caring which pen was in their hand.

The later annotations were not illegible. They were urgent. Someone had been working quickly, encoding their thoughts in whatever system came fastest, abandoning the careful structure of their training for the raw efficiency of personal notation. The handwriting compressed further toward the bottom of the page, the letters shrinking, the lines crowding together.

Morri closed the book.

She put it back in her coat pocket. Close, contain, revisit.

Her hands had stopped their usual motion and were pressed flat against the outside of her coat, one on each side, holding the pocket closed as though the book might climb out on its own.

Her jaw was tight. She unclenched it deliberately, the way she unclenched her hands from the coat, and started walking. Grieve Lane stretched ahead of her, narrow and green-lit, the luminescent vines casting their patient glow across the cobblestones. She moved through it faster than she'd been moving before.

She did not look at the thing in her pocket. The untied boot caught on a cobblestone and she didn't stop to fix it. The resonance lens pressed against her ribs.

She turned right onto Harrow Street. Left at the broken fountain. Through the narrow cut between the former counting house and the building that had grown a tree through its second floor. Home was four minutes away at her current pace, which was faster than the pace she'd set leaving the Mercantile Quarter, which had been faster than her usual amble through familiar streets.

The book sat in her pocket, slim and dense with someone else's handwriting, fourteen months overdue and full of questions she had not asked yet.

She walked faster.
