The same face in every portrait

Last checked against the product October 1, 2026

The usual trouble with generated character art is that the second picture shows a different person. Novelmint handles that in two places. A portrait is drawn from what your story bible says the character looks like, so the description does the work a prompt usually does. And the first portrait you approve becomes that character’s reference face, which later portraits are matched to.

Key takeaways

  • Character portraits is a mode of Minty that gives a character a face through image generation.
  • The likeness comes from the physical description in the character’s bible entry. A vague entry gives a generic face.
  • Minty checks that description first and helps you sharpen it before any credits are spent. That part costs nothing.
  • The first portrait you approve becomes the character’s reference face, and later portraits of them match it by default.
  • Each portrait is charged separately, confirmed one character and one attempt at a time. You can also upload your own image.

What it does

How the likeness is kept

Drawn from the bible

Build, coloring, hair, eyes, age, marks, how they carry themselves, what they usually wear. The portrait reads these from the character’s entry.

A description check first

If the entry is thin, she asks for the concrete details and saves them. Every later portrait of that character benefits.

The prompt covers the moment

What you describe for a given picture is the variable part: pose, framing, outfit, expression. The face is already settled.

A reference face

Approve a portrait and it becomes the one later portraits are matched to, across poses and scenes.

A fresh face when you want one

If the first face was wrong, or the character looks different later in the story, a portrait can be generated without matching the reference.

A whole cast

Work through several characters in one session. The cost is confirmed for each, never as a batch you did not agree to.

Example

One character, two pictures

You ask

Do a portrait of Ines. Then one of her on the gallery in the storm.

You get back

  1. A check of her entry: age and hair are there, eye color and build are not. Two questions to fill them in, and the entry is updated.
  2. The quality level and cost for the first portrait, then the portrait itself, shown in the chat.
  3. A note before you approve: this will be the face later portraits of Ines are matched to.
  4. After you approve, the storm portrait is confirmed and generated, with the same face in a different pose and setting.

An illustration with an invented character, to show the order of a session.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I get consistent AI portraits of the same character?
Two things have to stay fixed: the description and a reference image. In Novelmint the description lives in the character’s story bible entry and is read for every portrait, and the first portrait you approve becomes the reference that later ones are matched to.
Why did my portrait come out generic?
Usually because the character’s physical description is thin. The likeness is taken from the bible entry, so adding concrete details there - build, coloring, hair, eyes, distinguishing marks - improves the result more than a longer prompt does.
Can I change a character’s face later?
Yes. A portrait can be generated without matching the reference, for a first attempt that missed or for a character who looks different at another point in the story.
What does a portrait cost?
Each generation is charged in credits, per character and per attempt, at one of two quality levels. The cost is stated before each one. Improving the written description is free. The Unlimited plan includes a monthly image allowance. Current prices are on the pricing page.Pricing
Can I use my own artwork?
Yes. Upload your own image on the character’s Images tab.

What this page does not claim

  • Matching to a reference face improves consistency. It does not guarantee an identical face in every image.
  • A portrait can only be as specific as the description behind it.
  • Image generation is charged per image and is not covered by a chat allowance. The Unlimited plan includes a monthly image allowance.
  • The sample on this page uses an invented character.
