The main floor of the foundry is entirely empty when we descend, the vast space illuminated only by the amber pilot lights of the massive brick ovens. At the center of the polished concrete floor stands Lucchesi’s attorney, looking small and fragile beneath the soaring iron rafters.

Leo stands a mere two paces behind him, a silent, lethal shadow.

As Dante and I step off the final stair, our boots clicking rhythmically against the stone, the attorney bows his head sharply. He doesn't say a word. He simply places a heavy, brass-bound cedar box onto a nearby marble pastry slab and steps back into the perimeter guarded by Leo’s men.

Dante keeps his hand locked around my waist, his massive frame shielding me as he steps up to the box. With a flick of his scarred thumb, he pops the brass latch and throws back the lid.

Inside lies no new threat, no hidden leverage, and no fresh blood. Resting on a bed of faded velvet is an ancient, hand-cranked brass flour sifter—the very first tool my grandfather had brought over from Sicily—and a single envelope written in my father’s hurried, familiar script.

To my Gianna, the note reads. The ledger was for the monsters. This is for the baker. Build something that tastes like freedom.

A soft, breathless laugh escapes my lips, the final ghost of the Romano name evaporating into the warm, sugar-scented air of the foundry. The past hasn't come to destroy us; it has finally let us go.

Dante looks down at the brass sifter, then up at me, a rare, breathtakingly handsome smile breaking through the rigid, marble lines of his face. The predator’s fire in his amber eyes softens into something blindingly protective, something fiercely, unconditionally soft.

"He knew," Dante murmurs, his deep baritone vibrating with a profound, quiet reverence. He turns me fully into his embrace, his large, calloused hands sliding down from my waist to rest flat against my stomach, his long fingers splaying wide across the ivory silk of my blouse.

A violent, profoundly beautiful shiver ripples straight down my spine, but it isn't from fear. It’s from the secret we’ve been guarding for the last three weeks—the tiny, miraculous heartbeat growing beneath his palms.

"He knew you'd build an empire, little baker," Dante whispers, his voice dropping into a low, razor-sharp purr of absolute, unconditional possession. He leans down, pressing his forehead against mine, his hot breath brushing my lips as his hands press just a fraction firmer against my stomach. "And he knew a Marchetti would spend his last breath tearing the world apart to protect the legacy inside you."

I look up into the fierce, untamed depths of his gaze, my hands covering his massive, scarred forearms. The square-cut diamond on my left hand glints brilliantly under the industrial chandeliers, casting sharp fractures of light across the concrete that once ran with the blood of our enemies.

"The perimeter isn't just a cage anymore, Dante," I breathe against his mouth, a tear of pure, overwhelming triumph slipping down my cheek. "It’s a home."

"It is a fortress," Dante corrects softly, his jaw tightening with a fierce, unchecked satisfaction as he slides his fingers up to cup my jaw, tilting my face up to meet his. "And our child will inherit every single inch of the ground they crawl on."

He closes the final distance between us, capturing my lips in a deep, heavy, and utterly dominant kiss that tastes of sweet sugar, freezing winter, and a dangerous, beautiful forever. Outside, the Chicago fog rolls in to bury the world, but inside the foundry, the fire is burning hot, the ledger is closed, and the empire is finally complete.
