Book 3 is a standalone that starts of the events of Sergeant Gavin Anderson, a Mobile Response Sergeant of the City Watch. He and his squad are managing routes during the busiest day of the year, the Midsummer Festival, when suddenly, The Sun Curdles. How does he respond?
The Captain may be absent.
The Crown may be unreachable.
The Cathedral may have sealed itself.
The old city may barely exist.
But the Watch remains.

The Watchman's Burdenحين تتخثّر الشمس ويبدأ الرماد المتّقد بالتساقط، يجد الرقيب Gavin Anderson نفسه مسؤولاً عن حيٍّ انقطع فجأةً عن سلطة القيادة. مع تطلّع المدنيين إلى حرس المدينة طلباً للحماية، وكلّ صافرة تحمل أزمةً جديدة، يقع على عاتق Gavin مهمة إبقاء دوريته متماسكة، والحفاظ على مجتمعه، والتمسّك بالمبادئ التي يرمز إليها الشارة — فيما لا يزال أفراد عائلته في مكانٍ ما خارج نطاق متناله. *The Watchman's Burden* يرصد الساعات الأولى المحمومة من أحداث *The Ash Solstice* من شوارع الحي الغربي، حيث النجاة تعني أكثر من مجرّد البقاء على قيد الحياة. تعني أن تقرّر ما الذي سيصبح عليه الحرس حين لم يبقَ أحدٌ يُصدر الأوامر.
