Genna's Line

The bridge in Onner's Bridge crosses four feet of nothing, over a streambed dry since before her father was born, and Genna Busterson is the only person in town who has ever found that strange. She has her first solo commission. Her name on it, nobody else's signature required. Nine days of road between her and the eastern parishes, where no Busterson chain has ever been run, and a father who is a legend in fourteen counties for a pass he opened and an ale road he made cheap, and who has not paid for a drink since before she could walk. Then the county seat comes apart around her. What she does next mends a wall and saves a town. It also produces no witness, no reading, and no explanation. The verse that reaches Onner's Bridge before she does gives the credit to a spirit, and the story is better that way, and everyone she loves sings it over her head. The state, being less romantic, opens a file.

The writ hangs on the kitchen wall, pinned with a pie fork, and it gives her thirty days. Temporary classification: post-Cracking anomaly, unlicensed and unexamined. Failure to appear: actionable. Her father countersigned the bond, in the plain guild hand she learned her letters copying, because the alternative was travel in custody. The Academy Provincial has six counters for arrivals, including one for people who dispute their arrival. Nobody wins at that counter. The counter exists to receive the dispute. There is a court that does not hear things, only determines whether things have been heard, and a mint where the certificate is the thing, and a fountain whose water appears to have signed away its opinions. Genna arrives with a knight she never requested, one turnip of undeclared purpose, and a reasonable expectation that somewhere in that building, in some room, before some instrument, she will finally be asked what she actually is. The building does not stock the question.

The fine arrives two days before the letter it apologizes for, which is the post being efficient, and the receipt is dated Thursday, which is a Tuesday problem. Two years on, Genna Busterson has a junior license, a title nobody uses correctly, and a file that closed without ever clearing her. Not cleared. Not vindicated. Expired, which is a word for milk. Then a man in gray comes up the lane. He is polite, he is sorry, he has been sorry before, and he is not certain which side of the apology he is currently standing on. His notice makes no threat, sets no bond, names no penalty. The state's paper threatens; that is how you know the state is paying attention. This paper only records. The Keepers of the Hours have her parcel under review. What they will eventually put on the table is everything she has wanted since the bridge: the designation corrected of record, the appointment made permanent, authority full, tenure without term, and sight of her own account, entire.
