Dani did not slow down. In the days after her arrival she moved through the camp with the tireless energy of someone who had found the thing she was meant to do and intended to do it until the doing consumed her or the thing was done. She carried water. She organized shelters. She sat with the grieving woman whose silence had resisted everyone else's approach and she did not try to fill it. She learned names. She remembered them. I liked her. I want to be honest about that, because what follows will be easier to understand if you know that I liked the person at the center of it. Liking does not prevent seeing. But it changes the temperature of the seeing. Every gathering I have watched, across every age I have drifted through, has arrived at the same threshold. The threshold is a question, and the question is simple, and the simplicity is what makes it dangerous: what should we do? The question is asked by someone with a problem. The answer is given by whoever is standing closest to authority. And the answer, once given, is remembered. And the memory becomes a reference. And the reference becomes a precedent. And the precedent becomes a rule. And the rule becomes a requirement. And the requirement forgets it was ever a question. I have watched this happen to armies, to villages, to the war councils of elemental lords whose names the world no longer remembers. The calcification is always the same. Freedom does not shatter. It sets, the way clay sets when the water leaves it. Slowly. Without sound. The camp was twenty-three now.
