The moment Scarlett Mitchell walked into Aurelio's restaurant, every man in the room turned to look at her.

She was used to this. The lingering gazes, the subtle shifts in posture as men straightened their spines, the way conversations would pause mid-sentence as their eyes tracked her movement. She'd long ago stopped seeing it as flattering. It was simply power, and she'd learned to wield it like an expert.

Marcus was waiting at their usual table, the one in the corner, bathed in soft candlelight, where they could pretend the rest of the world didn't exist. He stood when he saw her, pulling out her chair with the kind of old-fashioned courtesy that suggested he believed in the fantasy of romance. The fantasy she sold so perfectly.

"You're stunning," he said, kissing her hand gently. His eyes traced her face like he was seeing her for the first time, even though this was their fifth dinner at Aurelio's.

"Only for you," Scarlett whispered, her voice soft enough that he had to lean closer to hear. The intimacy of the gesture, the exclusivity it suggested, made him smile with the kind of warmth that came from feeling truly chosen.

She had perfected this. The way she looked at him, like he was the only man who existed. The way she touched his arm across the table, light, casual, but enough to make his breath catch. The way she listened to his stories about his law practice, nodding at the right moments, laughing at his jokes, asking follow-up questions that suggested she genuinely cared about every detail of his life.

The truth was simpler; she cared about nothing except what she could take from him.

Throughout the first course, Marcus talked about a case he was working on. Scarlett had learned that successful men loved talking about their success. It made them feel important, powerful, and worthy. And when they felt worthy in your presence, they'd do almost anything to keep you there.

"You're so intelligent," she said when he'd finished his story, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand. "I've never met a man who was both successful and kind. It's rare, you know."

Marcus's chest puffed with pride. He'd heard variations of this compliment before, but it never got old. Especially not when it came from her, from a woman so beautiful, so refined, so clearly out of his league.

What he didn't know was that Scarlett had researched him extensively before their first "accidental" meeting in his office lobby. She knew his net worth down to the last penny. She knew about his ex-wife and the bitterness of their divorce. She knew that he'd been alone for three years, waiting for someone to restore his faith in love. She knew exactly what he needed to hear.

Her phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at it briefly,a text from Brandon, another man she'd been seeing, another heart full of trust and devotion, before turning it face-down with an apologetic smile.

"Work drama," she lied smoothly. "Nothing important. You have my full attention."

This was essential. Making him feel like he was the priority, like every other aspect of her life came second to him. It was what made men fall deeper, what made them believe they were special, different from all the others.

By the time dessert arrived, Marcus looked at her with an expression that Scarlett had come to recognize. The softening around his eyes. The slight tremor in his voice when he spoke. The way his hand trembled slightly as he reached for his water glass. He was at the tipping point. One more push, one more perfectly timed gesture, and he would be completely hers.

"Scarlett," he said, his voice lower now, more vulnerable, "I need to tell you something."

She leaned forward, her eyes widening slightly as if she was hanging on his every word. Her hand moved to his across the table, and she squeezed gently. The message was clear; “I'm here for you. You can tell me anything.”

"I know we haven't known each other that long," he continued, his eyes locked on hers, "but I've never felt this way about anyone. Not even my ex-wife. You're different, Scarlett. You make me feel like I matter. Like I'm not just a successful lawyer, like I'm a good man worth loving."

The irony wasn't lost on her. He mattered to her only as a bank account. But she made her expression soften further, made her eyes glisten with what appeared to be genuine emotion.

"You are a good man," she whispered. "You're the best man I've ever known."

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket. Scarlett's pulse quickened, but not with love or excitement. It was the thrill of a hunter who'd just trapped her prey. The engagement ring was exactly what she'd expected, elegant, expensive, a three-carat diamond that represented months of his salary.

"I know this is fast," he said, pulling the ring from the box, "but I don't want to wait. I don't want to risk losing you to someone else who might see what I see. Scarlett Mitchell, will you marry me?"

For a moment, she allowed herself to study his face. The hope in his eyes. The belief that he was about to build a future with the woman of his dreams. The absolute certainty that she loved him as much as he loved her.

"Yes," she breathed, and the word was delivered with such conviction that even the couple at the next table seemed moved by it.

He slipped the ring onto her finger, and she raised her hand to admire it, her eyes sparkling with tears that she could produce at will. Around them, other diners applauded softly. A stranger approached to congratulate them. Marcus pulled her close and kissed her, a kiss full of promise and devotion.

Scarlett kissed him back, losing herself in the performance so completely that for just a moment, she almost felt something. Almost believed in the fairy tale she was selling.

Then the moment passed, and she was back in control.

Later that night, in Marcus's bed, while he slept peacefully with his arm draped across her waist, Scarlett lay awake in the darkness. She was thinking about the timeline. The wedding could be delayed indefinitely with the right excuses. Six months, maybe a year. That would give her time to integrate fully into his life, to learn all his financial details, to position herself as essential to his world.

And then she would take everything.

Her phone lit up with another message. This one from David, the architect she'd been seeing for two months. He was so infatuated that he'd already suggested they move in together.

"Been thinking about you all day. Can't wait to see you tomorrow night. I love you, beautiful."

She smiled in the darkness. Poor David. He had no idea that the woman he loved existed only in his imagination.

She was about to set the phone down when another message came through. This one was from a man named Samuel, who she'd only just begun to engage with. A wealthy businessman who'd noticed her at a hotel bar. He was asking for her number, saying he was captivated by her.

Three men on the hook simultaneously. Each one believing he was the only one. Each one planning a future that would only lead to heartbreak and financial ruin.

This was her gift, the ability to be exactly what each man needed, to make them feel like they'd finally found their person. The woman who understood them. The woman who loved them unconditionally.

And she was getting better at it every single day.

But as she drifted off to sleep, with Marcus's engagement ring heavy on her finger and his arm around her waist, Scarlett had a sudden, strange thought: What if one day, someone played her the way she played them?

She pushed the thought away immediately. Impossible. She was too smart, too careful, too in control.

She would never let anyone get close enough to hurt her.

She just didn't know that fate had other plans.
