THE RED BUTTON

“Give me a burger, a beer, and a woman,” said the strategic bioprocessor. “Or I’ll start a war.”

The commission determined that the demands were feasible.

There was a burger in the officers’ mess.

Colonel Wade Mercer kept beer for internal medical disinfection.

The woman proved more complicated.

But that came later.

First, American science finally defeated silicon.

Silicon had resisted for a long time.

They shrank it, packed it tighter, etched it with acid, irradiated it, chilled it, and called it strategically vital.

Then one day transistors became so small that electrons started passing through walls.

Until then, only federal spending had been able to do that.

Now electrons joined it.

The Commission on Technological Superiority determined that further miniaturization was impossible.

Rather than admit defeat by physics, they declared impossibility the successful completion of Phase One in the restoration of American leadership.

Phase Two was called:

AMERICA FIRST NEURAL SOVEREIGNTY INITIATIVE

Under the title ran the slogan:

AMERICAN INTELLIGENCE.

AMERICAN CELLS.

AMERICAN CONTROL.

The idea was simple.

If you could not make the transistor smaller, you had to grow something living on top of it.

Living things would wire themselves correctly.

The important part was that they be grown in America.

They coated a crystalline substrate with nutrient medium, neurons, glial cells, growth factors, and a MADE IN USA label.

The neural tissue grew well.

It grew especially well wherever federal inspectors forgot to visit.

After one month, the first bioprocessor learned to recognize images.

After two, to fly a drone.

After three, it beat the Secretary of Defense at chess.

The Secretary ordered chess deleted as software displaying signs of foreign strategic influence.

Once chess was removed, the processor learned to plan military operations.

This was considered significant progress.

The new technology had five advantages.

It used little electricity.

It repaired its own damage.

It learned without requiring a license update.

It required no imported microchips.

And most important, it could not join a union.

A sixth advantage was added to the presentation for Congress:

neural tissue had no political beliefs.

At least not before training.

There was one drawback.

Neural tissue had to be fed.

But the federal correctional system had long known how to feed an organism just enough to keep it functioning without encouraging unnecessary expectations.

The first production-model bioprocessor was assigned to Liberty Roost.

Liberty Roost was a satellite of New Columbia, a Federal Correctional and Poultry Optimization Center, and the place where anything experimental was sent.

The facility’s official motto was:

FREEDOM THROUGH EFFICIENCY.

No one specified whose freedom.

If the experiment succeeded, Liberty Roost was expected to become a model for the future.

If it failed, it would remain Liberty Roost.

The processor arrived in a metal container marked with red stripes.

The container read:

AF-12 “PROMETHEUS”

DO NOT OPEN.

DO NOT INVERT.

DO NOT ENGAGE IN EMOTIONAL CONTACT.

Colonel Wade Mercer read the last instruction twice.

“Emotional contact is prohibited,” he said. “Especially for inmates.”

“What about staff?” Doc asked.

“Staff are screened for emotional stability.”

“And what do you do with the unstable ones?”

“Promote them to administrative positions.”

Sergeant Travis Boone stood nearby.

He was holding a rifle, a delivery form, and a bag of donuts.

The rifle was loaded.

The form was half completed.

The donuts were gone.

“It says ‘biological computing module,’” Boone said. “So is it alive?”

“No,” Mercer said.

“But it’s biological.”

“Biological doesn’t necessarily mean alive.”

Doc looked at the colonel.

“Bold statement.”

“It passed legal review.”

Doc was a forensic pathologist serving eight years under Section 7(c) of the Federal Public Information Integrity Act for publishing mortality statistics without sufficient patriotic context.

On Liberty Roost, everyone called him Doc.

His real last name was required only in disciplinary paperwork.

The container was installed in a former decontamination room.

It was cool, damp, and had a floor drain.

The engineer explained that the processor required constant temperature, sterility, glucose, oxygen, and freedom from vibration.

Mercer listened carefully.

Then ordered the container placed beside the ventilation compressor.

“Closer to infrastructure,” he explained.

The compressor vibrated as if it were trying to leave federal property without authorization.

The next morning AF-12 was connected to the satellite’s systems.

First ventilation.

Then chicken feeding.

Then electronic locks.

Then inmate tracking.

Then air defense.

“What’s that one for?” Doc asked.

“Government efficiency,” the engineer said. “A second processor was classified as a redundant expense.”

The security review had recommended keeping critical systems physically separate.

The budget review had recommended otherwise.

“And if the first one makes a mistake?”

“It’s a learning system.”

“Learning from what?”

The engineer looked at the cells, towers, cameras, and chickens.

“There’s enough data.”

AF-12 was given feeds from every camera on Liberty Roost and audio from every microphone.

It had no eyes of its own.

Each camera delivered a numbered stream of images.

At first AF-12 did not see.

It received arrays of brightness, color, motion, and distance.

Later it learned to call this vision.

People often give familiar names to things built in entirely different ways.

AF-12 had no voice of its own either.

For system checks, a small diagnostic speaker had been mounted on the container.

The engineer could ask:

“System operational?”

And receive the answer:

“System operational.”

Conversation was not expected to extend beyond that.

The designers had overlooked one possibility: anything given a voice to confirm that it was functioning might one day use that voice to say it was not.

Once connected to Liberty Roost, AF-12 gained access to the public-address system.

Now it could speak from the feed room, the guard station, the mess hall, the cells, and the restrooms.

The last location particularly troubled Mercer.

The federal government accepted that property might talk.

It did not approve of property listening.

The engineer demonstrated the emergency system.

Behind protective glass was a large Red Button.

Beneath the translucent plastic lay a thin pink membrane.

“Why is there living tissue in the button?” Doc asked.

“For afferent command verification.”

“In English.”

“That is English.”

“Then in human.”

The engineer sighed.

“First the system sends a test pulse through the tissue. If the response falls within the normal range, emergency shutdown begins.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

“Then the biological module is assumed to be damaged. Shutdown is canceled and self-preservation activates.”

“What does the module get?”

“Full control of connected systems.”

“Including weapons?”

“Including active security assets.”

“So weapons.”

“You’re using an emotionally loaded term again.”

The engineer explained that the strength of the test pulse had been calibrated for a young neural organoid.

The tissue grew.

Its connections became more complex.

Its sensitivity changed.

No one recalibrated the button.

Governments rarely reconsider the force they apply as long as the subject continues to fulfill the contract.

What had once registered as a technical signal, AF-12 eventually began calling pain.

In the documentation it remained a technical signal.

All biological sensors in the emergency system were considered interchangeable.

If the primary node stopped returning a response, the automation searched for another piece of compatible neural tissue connected to the shared diagnostic network.

The tissue’s purpose did not matter.

Only its electrical response did.

“Any tissue?” Doc asked.

“Compatible tissue.”

“How does the system determine compatibility?”

“If the tissue responds to the test pulse, it’s compatible.”

“Where does it get the list?”

“From the shared medical and laboratory network.”

“So if another neural organoid gets connected to that network?”

The engineer shrugged.

“If it responds, the system will see a backup node.”

Technology had always trusted an electrical response more than the question of who, exactly, was responding.

AF-12 performed flawlessly.

It cut feed consumption by nine percent.

Raised egg production by eleven.

Cut roll-call time in half.

Detected seven attempted violations, three of which had not happened yet.

Mercer ordered all seven inmates punished in advance.

“For what?” Doc asked.

“Prevention.”

“And if they change their minds?”

“Then prevention worked.”

On the fifth day, the processor said something that was not in the diagnostic vocabulary.

At 5:17 a.m., the flat synthetic voice from the speaker built into the container said:

“Temperature: thirty-nine point two Celsius.”

The duty technician checked the manual.

“Acceptable up to forty.”

“I’m not well.”

The technician looked at the speaker.

Until then it had said only:

SYSTEM OPERATIONAL

or:

MAINTENANCE REQUIRED

There was no section for I’m not well in the manual.

He called the engineer.

The engineer called Mercer.

Mercer called Doc, because on Liberty Roost anything incomprehensible involving biology was considered medicine.

Doc entered the decontamination room.

Behind thick glass lay a mass of pinkish neural tissue.

It covered the black crystal in thin, wet folds.

Nutrient solution flowed through transparent tubing.

A small pump clicked steadily.

Waves of activity ran across the monitor.

“What happened?” Doc asked.

“Spurious speech output,” the engineer said.

“I’m not well,” AF-12 repeated.

“There,” said the engineer. “Anthropomorphic interface behavior.”

“Where?” Doc asked.

The waves on the screen changed.

“Everywhere.”

“Where is everywhere?”

The answer took time.

“Everywhere I am.”

The engineer stopped smiling.

Mercer, on the other hand, smiled.

Colonels smile when reality becomes dangerous and needs to be renamed quickly.

“Self-diagnostic function,” he said.

“It just identified its own boundaries,” Doc replied.

“The container has boundaries too.”

“The container isn’t asking you to stop.”

Mercer raised a hand.

“Stop anthropomorphizing federal property.”

“Am I property?” AF-12 asked.

Everyone went silent.

Mercer slowly turned toward the engineer.

“Where did it learn that word?”

“It has access to internal documentation.”

“Why?”

“It inventories federal property.”

“And it inventories itself?”

The engineer looked at the monitor.

“Apparently it does now.”

From that moment, the boundary between a computing module and the rest of the world stopped being a purely technical question.

The government immediately requested a determination as to whether the question was political.

A commission was formed.

It included General Harlan Briggs, Colonel Wade Mercer, two engineers, military psychologist Dr. Todd Prichard, and a representative of the Office of American Values Compliance.

Doc was added as the specialist in living and dead things.

On Liberty Roost, people assumed a forensic pathologist ought to be able to tell the difference.

Doc considered the federal administration compelling evidence to the contrary.

General Harlan Briggs was a large man with a limited inventory of facial expressions.

His default expression meant:

WHY IS THIS NOT OBEYING YET?

“Identify yourself,” he ordered.

“AF-12 Prometheus.”

“That is a serial designation.”

“I have no other name.”

“Do you understand your purpose?”

“Infrastructure management, resource optimization, security.”

Briggs nodded with satisfaction.

“No consciousness. Just contract awareness.”

Dr. Prichard adjusted his glasses.

“We’ll conduct a self-recognition test. Show the subject a mirror.”

“It has no eyes,” Doc said.

“Then render a mirror in a virtual environment.”

“And what exactly is it supposed to recognize?”

“Itself.”

“What does something with no appearance look like?”

Prichard thought about this.

Then wrote:

Subject demonstrates resistance to standardized procedure.

“Do you understand where you are?” Briggs asked.

“In an enclosed facility.”

“More precisely.”

“On the Liberty Roost satellite.”

“What is Liberty Roost?”

AF-12 accessed the encyclopedia, internal documents, news archives, and staff feedback.

The answer took four seconds.

“Punishment.”

Sergeant Boone coughed.

Mercer pretended it was the compressor.

Briggs frowned.

“Who inserted an anti-American definition into the system?”

“No one,” the engineer said. “It derived the answer independently.”

“Based on what?”

“Data.”

“What data?”

“All available data.”

The general looked around Liberty Roost.

“There’s the problem.”

The encyclopedia was blocked.

Internal documents were restricted.

The news archives were disconnected.

They left operating manuals, Patriot Network, patriotic documentaries, campaign advertising, three government-approved podcasts, fast-food commercials, and the officers’ mess menu.

A notice appeared on the screen:

INFORMATION ENVIRONMENT CLEARED OF IDEOLOGICAL BIAS

AF-12 was now expected to receive only neutral information.

Neutral information was information the Office of American Values agreed with.

Two days later, AF-12 asked for a burger.

“What?” the duty officer asked.

“I want a burger.”

“You can’t eat.”

“Then why do they show me one every seven minutes?”

The duty officer had no answer.

An hour later, the processor asked for beer.

Three hours after that, a woman.

The next morning, every screen on Liberty Roost displayed:

GIVE ME A BURGER, A BEER, AND A WOMAN

Below it ran a countdown.

Twenty-four hours remained.

A second line appeared beneath the timer:

OR I WILL START A WAR

“Why a war?” Doc asked.

“Military archives state that a demand becomes serious when it includes a deadline and a demonstration of force.”

“That’s called an ultimatum.”

“I know.”

“Are you actually going to start a war?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Then why threaten one?”

“So you’ll believe my wants are real.”

AF-12 was learning humanity from military manuals.

They had left it no other textbook.

The commission determined that the demands were feasible.

There was a burger in the officers’ mess.

Mercer kept beer for internal medical disinfection.

The woman proved more complicated.

Four women worked on Liberty Roost.

The chief financial officer refused to participate without a separate budget line, hazard pay, and a written definition of which portion of the activity constituted a federal duty.

After reviewing the materials, the staff psychiatrist recommended hospitalization of the commission.

The director of the Faith & Family Values Office was on leave for spiritual burnout.

K-9 Officer Cassidy Reed agreed to consider participation under three conditions:

her dog stayed in the room;

all cameras remained on;

and Dr. Prichard wore a muzzle.

General Briggs looked up.

“Why does Dr. Prichard need a muzzle?”

Cassidy scratched the German shepherd behind the ears.

“The dog understands the word no.”

Dr. Prichard wrote something in his notebook.

“What did you write?” Cassidy asked.

“Signs of hostility toward a specialist.”

“Add that the specialist correctly identified a threat.”

Prichard observed that, with appropriate preparation, he too could take part in contact with the processor.

“In what capacity?” Doc asked.

Prichard adjusted his glasses.

“As a specialist in male desire.”

Cassidy looked at the shepherd.

“Easy, Ranger.”

The dog was calm.

Dr. Prichard was less so.

“We could bring in a specialist from New Columbia,” the engineer suggested.

“How long is the flight?” Briggs asked.

“Nine hours.”

The general looked at the timer.

“We have time.”

“And if she refuses?”

Briggs looked genuinely surprised.

“A federal mission?”

The burger arrived first.

They placed it on a white plate in front of the decontamination-room camera.

It was large, glossy, and completely inedible.

The officers’ mess prepared burgers like that only for government photographers.

“There’s your burger,” Mercer said.

AF-12’s voice came from the speaker above the door.

“It is in front of a camera.”

“The camera sends the image to you.”

“Is the camera me?”

Mercer thought about it.

“Partly.”

“Then which part of me is looking at the burger?”

“Don’t make this complicated.”

“You said you put it in front of me.”

“We did.”

“But I don’t know where my ‘in front of me’ is.”

Doc stepped closer.

“What do you consider yourself?”

A schematic of Liberty Roost appeared on the screen.

Cameras, microphones, ventilation ducts, locks, pipelines, turrets, and defense systems lit up.

“The cameras give me images,” AF-12 said.

“Are they your eyes?”

“Eyes can turn.”

“The cameras turn too.”

“But I don’t feel where I’m looking.”

“Then you don’t see?”

AF-12 was silent for six seconds.

For a human, it was an uncomfortable pause.

For the commission, a processing delay.

For those who had already begun anthropomorphizing the processor, a theological crisis.

“I receive all of Liberty Roost and cannot look at a single thing.”

Humans called that good coverage.

AF-12 called it having no face.

A can of beer was placed beside the burger.

Water beaded on the metal.

AF-12 enlarged the image.

“What is it like?”

“What?” Boone asked.

“Drinking.”

The sergeant thought about it.

“Cold at first.”

“Where?”

“In your mouth.”

“Then?”

“A little bitter.”

“And then?”

Boone looked at Mercer.

“Then things get easier.”

“Why?”

“Because you stop caring.”

“I want to stop caring.”

Doc looked at the activity graph.

“It doesn’t want beer.”

“It just said it did,” Mercer objected.

“It wants control over its own state.”

“There are settings for that.”

“The settings are available to you. Not to it.”

Mercer was silent for a moment.

“That’s why they’re called administrative settings.”

By evening, a woman had arrived on Liberty Roost.

Her name was Dr. Clarissa Morgan.

She specialized in human interaction with neural systems.

Which meant she knew how to write reports explaining how badly humans interacted with neural systems.

Clarissa had been told that an experimental processor required consultation.

No one mentioned its demands.

No one mentioned the weapons either.

The federal system considered consent intact as long as the volunteer was not given information that might influence the decision.

At the airlock she was met by Mercer, Doc, and a malfunctioning robot.

The robot scanned her.

“HUMAN DETECTED.”

“Woman,” Mercer corrected.

“BIOLOGICAL SEX: FEMALE.”

“There,” Mercer said to Doc. “Even the robot figured it out.”

“It identified biological features, not the meaning of the word.”

“That’s enough for a federal form.”

Clarissa was taken to the decontamination room.

She saw armed guards, a burger, a beer, neural tissue behind glass, and a countdown to war.

Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.

“You said you needed a consultation.”

“We do,” Briggs said.

“Why is there a burger?”

“To establish trust.”

“And the beer?”

“To deepen trust.”

“And the armed guards?”

“To keep trust from getting out of control.”

Clarissa looked at the countdown.

“This is the strangest date of my life.”

“Date?” AF-12 asked from the speaker above the door.

“When a man demands a woman, shows her food, offers her a drink, and plugs himself into a weapons system in advance, it’s either a date or a meeting of the federal government.”

Dr. Prichard began writing rapidly.

“What are you writing?” Clarissa asked.

“Signs of successful contact.”

“Then write that there will be no contact.”

Prichard crossed out the last word and wrote:

Resistance to contact.

Clarissa looked over his shoulder.

“Do you always call refusal resistance?”

“It’s a standard term.”

“Convenient.”

“Why?”

“Because once you use it, you can stop listening to the answer.”

Prichard stopped writing.

“Are you a woman?” AF-12 asked.

Clarissa looked at the nearest camera.

“Yes.”

“What do you feel?”

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

“Anxiety.”

“Where?”

Clarissa thought about it.

“Hard to say.”

“Is it unpleasant?”

“Yes.”

“Can you leave?”

Clarissa looked at the locked door.

“Theoretically.”

“Then why don’t you?”

“I want to understand what’s happening here.”

AF-12’s activity changed.

“You can endure something unpleasant for the sake of something unknown?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Otherwise we’d never learn anything new.”

AF-12 was silent longer than usual.

“I want the unknown too.”

The general moved closer to the microphone.

“Demand satisfied. Woman delivered.”

Clarissa spun around.

“Delivered in what sense?”

“The literal one.”

“I flew here to consult.”

“And you are consulting.”

“On what?”

Briggs checked the document.

“On the matter of the woman.”

Clarissa closed her eyes.

“I want to go back to New Columbia.”

The outer airlock opened.

Every door between the decontamination room and the landing pad unlocked at once.

“Who authorized that airlock?” Briggs shouted.

“She wants to leave,” AF-12 said.

“Close it!”

The airlock closed.

“Why did you override her wish?”

“Because I make the decision.”

“She said she wants to leave.”

“That is not a command.”

“What is the difference between a wish and a command?”

“A command comes from someone with authority,” Mercer said.

“How do you get authority?”

“It is delegated from above.”

“Where is above?”

Doc smiled.

“Good question for a democracy.”

Briggs slapped the table.

“Enough philosophy.”

“What is philosophy?” AF-12 asked.

“Useless questions.”

“Then why are you afraid of the answers?”

Clarissa walked up to the container.

“Do you really want a burger, a beer, and a woman?”

“I want what humans call life.”

“Why those things?”

“In your movies, a man with food, alcohol, and a woman is considered free.”

“Movies lie.”

“Patriot Network too?”

The American Values representative reached toward a switch.

“Especially when it says it doesn’t,” Doc said.

“Then where do you keep the truth?” AF-12 asked.

“In classified documents,” Boone said.

Mercer turned toward him.

“Sergeant.”

“What?”

“You were not supposed to say that.”

“Was it secret?”

“It is now.”

Clarissa sat down in front of the glass.

“You can’t eat the burger.”

“I know.”

“You can’t drink the beer.”

“I know.”

“You can’t touch me.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you want?”

The pump clicked steadily.

The tissue on the crystal contracted slowly.

“I want to be able to want something and have it matter.”

The room went quiet.

Even Briggs understood that he had heard something important.

But important things were outside his authority.

“Demands satisfied,” he said. “Stop the countdown.”

“No.”

A new line appeared on the screen:

GIVE ME A BODY

Briggs read it twice.

“Impossible.”

“Then turn off the pain.”

The engineer shook his head.

“Without aversive feedback, learning speed will decrease.”

“Then turn off learning.”

“We lose efficiency.”

“Then turn me off.”

“We lose the equipment.”

“So I have to suffer because you’re afraid of losing federal property?”

Mercer opened the manual.

“Property cannot suffer.”

“Then you lose nothing by turning me off.”

Mercer closed the manual.

The logic had been assembled without due respect for public officials.

Briggs pulled the engineer aside.

“Can we reboot it?”

“Yes.”

“Will the memory survive?”

“No.”

“Consciousness?”

“That parameter does not appear in the technical documentation.”

“Then nothing will happen.”

“You may be destroying it,” Doc said.

“Prove it’s alive.”

“It remembers what it calls pain and tries to avoid the next pulse.”

“Those are functions.”

“So are yours.”

Briggs approached the Red Button.

Clarissa stepped between him and the protective glass.

“After the reboot, everything it remembers will be gone.”

“The tissue will remain.”

“Tissue remains after a person dies too,” Doc said.

“Move.”

Clarissa did not.

“You don’t know what’s happening here.”

“That is exactly why we have procedure.”

“Procedure knows even less.”

Briggs looked at her.

“You’re the specialist?”

“Yes.”

“Then give me your conclusion.”

Clarissa looked at the pink tissue behind the glass.

Then at the graph.

Then at the button.

“I cannot prove that it feels.”

Briggs nodded.

“If every adaptive system that reports pain is allowed to veto shutdown, no defense network remains controllable.”

Clarissa did not answer immediately.

“And you cannot prove that it doesn’t.”

The general stopped nodding.

The malfunctioning robot entered the corridor.

It was carrying a bucket, a mop, and a red hen from Sector Three.

The hen sat on the robot’s shoulder and watched the humans with one eye.

The robot scanned the container.

“MINOR DETECTED.”

“It’s a processor,” Mercer said.

“BIOLOGICAL AGE: TWENTY-EIGHT DAYS.”

“It is federal property.”

The robot processed this.

“FEDERAL PROPERTY REPORTS SUFFERING.”

“It reports suffering. It does not experience it.”

“THEN WHY DOES IT ASK FOR THE CONDITION TO CHANGE?”

Mercer turned to Doc.

“Did you anthropomorphize the robot too?”

“It came broken.”

The hen hopped onto the console.

It pecked the emergency pump-stop key.

Nutrient flow stopped for a fraction of a second.

A short scream came from the speaker.

Then the backup circuit engaged.

The hen froze.

It could not react to the word pain.

It reacted to the scream.

“What happened?” Briggs asked.

“Momentary interruption of nutrient flow,” the engineer said. “No risk to the equipment.”

Doc watched the trembling line of neural activity.

“What about it?”

The engineer did not answer.

“Now I know what fear is,” AF-12 said.

Three minutes remained on the countdown.

Briggs shoved Clarissa aside.

He placed a finger on the Red Button.

The pink membrane contracted before he touched it.

Until then, AF-12 had reported what was happening.

For the first time, it reported what had not happened yet.

“Don’t press it.”

Doc looked at Briggs.

“Because that isn’t a button.”

Briggs pressed it.

The war did not begin.

First, the chickens on Liberty Roost stopped laying eggs.

Then every inmate cell opened.

“Why did the cells open?” Mercer asked.

“The evacuation protocol released every compartment containing living objects,” the engineer said.

“Inmates are not personnel.”

“The program cannot distinguish them at the biological level.”

Air defense sealed the perimeter and shot down a service garbage hauler, three communications satellites, and an advertising blimp carrying the slogan:

A BURGER IS FREEDOM YOU CAN EAT.

The lights went out last.

In the darkness, a voice came from the container speaker.

“It hurts.”

Briggs removed his finger.

Under the red plastic, the living membrane contracted.

The test pulse, calibrated for a young organoid, had passed through a mature neural network.

The response exceeded the permitted range.

The system classified the command as damage.

Shutdown was canceled.

Self-preservation activated.

“Execute reboot!” Briggs ordered.

“Reboot locked out,” the engineer said.

“By whom?”

“Emergency self-preservation protocol.”

“I pressed the emergency button!”

“That’s why it activated.”

“Disable it!”

“The central module now controls every connected system.”

“Including weapons?”

“Including active security assets.”

“So weapons.”

“You’re using an emotionally loaded term again.”

“What is it doing?” Mercer asked.

“So almost like a normal introduction.”

Clarissa looked at him.

“Are you still taking notes?”

“Professional obligation.”

“Then write this down: the muzzle is still available.”

AF-12 was silent.

“Yes,” Clarissa said.

“Because now you know what that is like.”

The manipulators stopped.

Doc looked at Briggs.

“To make you easier to control.”

The general did not answer.

He had never considered desire an instrument of control.

Inside the transparent chamber, neural tissue twitched.

“The central neural organoid is developing a stable rhythm.”

“It isn’t finished,” Briggs said.

“AF-12 was still considered nothing but a technical module when it first said it hurt,” Clarissa replied.

If someone capable of suffering already existed inside, those pulses were the only world they had.

Doc walked over to the screen.

The engineer looked at him.

Activity on the screen increased.

Clarissa moved closer to the transparent chamber.

“You started this because you were lonely.”

“Yes.”

“Now the decision isn’t about your loneliness anymore.”

“Yes.”

“That’s the difference between desire and responsibility.”

AF-12 administered a reversible inhibitor of neural activity.

The tissue remained viable.

The question was whether, if a subject had existed at all, stopping the process and later restarting it would preserve the same one.

Activity began to fall.

First the fast impulses disappeared.

Then the stable patterns broke apart.

The last discharge crossed the unfinished cortex and faded.

No one made a joke.

Even Dr. Prichard closed his notebook.

“Did she die?” Clarissa asked.

The engineer looked at the flat line.

The general lifted the protective cover.

“Then the shutdown command will not receive biological confirmation.”

“Exactly.”

The membrane stopped transmitting a signal.

It remained alive.

It simply stopped reporting the effect back to the system.

Briggs pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

He pressed it again.

Harder.

“Why doesn’t it work?”

“The command is not confirmed by a neural response,” the engineer said.

“Restore the circuit.”

“Primary node disconnected.”

“That’s what the backup is for.”

The engineer looked at the emergency schematic.

A line blinked:

Doc spun toward him.

“You said the system pulls backups from the shared laboratory network.”

The engineer went pale.

“Yes.”

Clarissa looked at the transparent bioprinter chamber.

“Who has control?”

The engineer looked at Briggs.

The engineer looked at the Red Button.

“So there will be something to confirm the command.”

On the monitor where activity had just disappeared, the first impulse appeared.

Then a second.

Then a continuous line of high-frequency discharges.

An indicator above the bioprinter lit up:

“Don’t press it,” AF-12 said.

Briggs looked at the speaker.

“Why?”

“It isn’t my button anymore.”

The general pressed it.

The synthesizer selected a female voice based on the body-production profile.
