The freezing fog presses thick against the high glass windows of the executive office, erasing the Chicago skyline until there is nothing left but the two of us inside our reinforced sanctuary. The low, deep hum of the underground silos has finally quieted, leaving a heavy, golden silence in its wake.

I sit on the edge of the mahogany desk, my fingers tracing the smooth, cool wood. Dante remains standing between my knees, a dark and possessive monolith, his amber eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that makes the ambient heat of the room feel entirely concentrated on my skin.

A sharp, rhythmic knock shatters the silence.

Dante’s jaw tightens into a handsome, unyielding line of pure irritation. He doesn't step back from me, keeping his large hand anchored firmly on my thigh as he barks toward the door, "What is it, Leo?"

The heavy oak door opens just a fraction, Leo’s silhouette framing the threshold. His expression is grim, the usual cool professionalism replaced by a tight, disciplined urgency. He doesn't look at me; his eyes fix directly on Dante.

"Don Lucchesi’s attorney just crossed the perimeter at the front gate," Leo says, his voice a low, clipped rumble. "He didn't come with an escort, and he isn't carrying a tribute. He has a physical courier box addressed strictly to the Donna."

My heart skips a beat, its frantic rhythm instantly telegraphing straight through my skin to Dante’s resting palm. Lucchesi. The man was supposed to be decaying quietly in a Swiss medical villa, his family broken, his territory absorbed.

Dante’s amber eyes darken, the tiny pale scar through his left eyebrow twitching violently. A low, predatory purr rattles deep in his chest—a sound that usually precedes an absolute execution.

"Did the sweep team clear it?" Dante demands, his voice dropping into that terrifying, razor-sharp register of pure command.

"Clean," Leo nods. "No explosives, no trackers. Just old parchment. The attorney says it’s the final codicil to your father’s original estate, Gianna. Something that wasn't included in the primary ledger."

The room drops to zero degrees. The ghost of my father, a man who built a labyrinth of secrets just to survive, stretches its hand out from the grave.

"Bring him to the main floor," Dante commands softly, his grip on my thigh tightening until the heat of his palm prints straight through my trousers. "And Leo? If he steps one inch out of line, bury him under the concrete before he can speak another word."

"Understood, boss." Leo retreats, the door clicking shut behind him.

The silence returns, but it is no longer triumphant; it is pressurized, thick with the realization that the past doesn't burn as easily as we thought.

Dante turns his full attention back to me, his large hands sliding up from my knees to frame my face, his thumbs pressing hard into my jawline to tilt my head up. He forces me to look into the fierce, untamed fire of his gaze.

"It doesn't matter what’s in that box, little baker," he whispers, his hot breath brushing my lips, sending a violent, familiar shiver straight down my spine. "The Romano ledger is closed. I branded my name into the bricks of this town, and I branded my ring onto your finger."

He lifts my left hand, his thumb grinding roughly over the square-cut diamond, embedding the metal into my skin—a beautiful, lethal reminder of the cage we built together.

"We don't answer to dead men," Dante promises, his jaw setting into a rigid sheet of marble as his lips hover inches from mine. "Let’s go see what kind of ghost thinks it can cross our perimeter.”
