Elde moved through the camp the way cold moves through stone: slowly, thoroughly, reaching every surface without appearing to travel. Within days of her assignment she had spoken to every person in the community about the teachings, and the speaking was quiet, and the quiet was more effective than volume, because quiet requires the listener to lean in, and leaning in is the first posture of agreement. I watched her work and I recognized it, because I had watched Maretti do the same work with different tools. Maretti's warmth was a fire you sat beside. Elde's patience was a current you stood in. Both moved you. The direction was the same. The mechanism was different enough that nobody noticed the new arrival was doing what the old one had always done, and the not-noticing was the most efficient kind of power transfer I had ever witnessed. I have been thinking about names. Not the names of people, though those matter and I will come to them. The names of things. Places. Beliefs. The act of naming is the act of fixing, and fixing is the act of declaring that the thing named has become permanent enough to require a word. A camp does not need a name. A settlement does. A practice does not need a name. A faith does. And a girl who has been watching from the edges for longer than most of the people here have been present does not need a name until the moment she steps out of the edge and into the story, and the stepping is the thing that makes the name necessary.
