THE GIRL WHO BECAME EVERYONE’S STORY

She had spent years learning not to let other people's versions of her become her truth.

They called her proud because she had stopped begging to be understood. They called her strong because they had never seen what happened when she was alone.

They were not always wrong about her. Neither were they always right.

She had loved selfishly on certain days and given generously on others. She had hurt people without intending to, then used her intentions as evidence of her innocence. She could condemn another person's behaviour and explain away the same behaviour when it was hers.

Somewhere along the way, defending herself became an art.

She could explain almost anything.

When she ignored a friend for weeks, she called it protecting her peace. That was true. What she left out was that she had seen the friend's messages, known they needed her, and chosen the silence anyway.

It was not the lie she told that protected her.

It was the truth she chose to tell.

Then someone she secretly loved began asking questions no one else had thought to ask.

Not accusations. Small questions.

“Why did you say that then, if you felt this now?”

She laughed. She explained. He listened.

But he did not confuse understanding her reasons with absolving her actions.

And inside an old memory, a woman she had once condemned began to look different.

Not innocent. Not guilty.

Familiar.

The memory wasn't accusing her.

It was mirroring her.

The woman had been wrong about her.

And she had still been wrong about herself.

She reached for her usual defences. The circumstances. The intention. The things the woman had failed to understand.

Every explanation arrived intact.

That was the frightening part.

She had become very good at telling the truth selectively—and at making the missing truth look irrelevant.

She had spent years fearing the stories other people told about her. She had never considered that she might be using their mistakes to avoid examining her own.

She was right about them.

And still wrong about herself.

She was not obliged to become the person everyone described.

But she was responsible for the person her actions revealed.

And the story she could no longer escape was not the one they had written about her.

It was the one her explanations had been quietly writing all along.
