The digital display on the executive desk flickers, the green numbers tracking the final metric tons of grain as they settle into the depths of the foundry. Outside, the gray winter twilight is turning into a dense, freezing fog that swallows the lake, but inside the office, the air is thick with a suffocating, triumphant heat.

Dante doesn't break the kiss until my breath runs completely ragged, his lips leaving a burning trail along my jawline before his forehead rests against mine. His chest heaves against my ribs, a massive, steady engine of pure, unyielding dominance.

"The final manifest just updated, boss," Leo’s voice comes through the sleek desktop intercom, crisp and entirely professional. "The Western trucks are empty and clearing the North Avenue checkpoint. Silvio’s logistics office just sent a formal confirmation. No notes, no complaints. They’re entirely compliant."

Dante reaches down without looking, his long fingers pressing the receiver button. "Have the night shift double the perimeter guards on the lower level, Leo. If Silvio wants to bleed, he won't do it in the daylight. He’ll send rats into the dark."

"Already done, Don Marchetti. Sleep well," Leo replies, and the intercom clicks off, leaving the room in a heavy, charged silence.

Dante looks down at me, his amber eyes glittering in the dim office lighting like polished stone. The tiny pale scar through his left eyebrow shifts as his features soften into a dark, fiercely possessive expression. He reaches out, his thumb slowly tracing the line of my collarbone beneath the ivory silk blouse, his rough skin a stark contrast to the delicate fabric.

"You changed the rules of the game today, Gianna," he murmurs, his voice dropping into that razor-sharp purr that completely commands my reality. "The Commission spent thirty years establishing those transit percentages. You broke their timeline in thirty seconds."

"They needed to know the price of the Marchetti name has gone up," I say softly, my hands sliding up his broad shoulders, my fingers curling into the crisp cotton of his shirt. "If we let them slide on the first shipment, they would have spent the whole winter looking for cracks in the foundation."

"There are no cracks," Dante growls softly, his jaw setting into a handsome, unyielding sheet of marble. He loops his large arm around my waist, lifting me effortlessly off my feet until I am sitting on the edge of the heavy mahogany desk, surrounded by the digital registries and the gold key that started it all.

He steps between my knees, his massive frame completely enveloping me, blocking out the rest of the world. He takes my left hand, his thumb rubbing a slow, heavy circle over the massive square-cut diamond, embedding the cold metal into my skin—a beautiful, permanent reminder of the cage we built together.

"The city belongs to the survivors, little baker," Dante whispers, his hot breath brushing my lips, sending a violent, familiar shiver straight down my spine. "And we are the only ones left standing. Look at me."

I look up, getting lost in the fierce, untamed fire of his gaze.

"From tonight, you don't just hold the ledger," he promises, his voice carrying the absolute weight of the empire we now rule. "You hold the lifeblood of this city. And anyone who wants to breathe our air pays the tax you dictate."

He leans down, his mouth capturing mine once more in a deep, slow, and utterly demanding declaration of forever, while the freezing Chicago fog rolls in to bury the rest of the world beneath our perimeter.
