The camp had been still for two days. The rules were holding. The food came in its order. The shelters stood in their places. The parable had been settled, or at least the arguing about it had stopped, which is not the same thing but produces the same quiet. Maretti's structure was working, and the working was smooth, and the smoothness had settled over the valley like a second weather, calmer than the one I could feel in the air. The girl had not settled with it. Her tension remained. I found myself checking her weather the way you check a wound: not because you expect it to have healed, but because you need to know whether it has worsened. It had not worsened. It had not improved. It sat inside her, pressing against the warmth around it, and I began to wonder whether tension that does not resolve is not tension at all but something else. A conclusion that has not yet found its voice. She felt them from half a day's distance. The signals emerged from the background noise of the world the way stars emerge from twilight: not arriving but revealing, each one becoming distinct as the ambient hum thinned and the individual frequencies separated. She counted them from the air above the valley, invisible, drifting in the thermals that rose from the river, and the counting took time because the signals were coming from multiple directions and at multiple speeds and she had to distinguish between the ones that were moving toward the camp and the ones that were merely moving. A cluster from the south. The largest signal, dense and collective, the way groups read when they have been walking together long enough that their weathers bleed into each other.
