Bring the book you already wrote
Last checked against the product October 1, 2026
A manuscript written elsewhere should not have to be written again. Import takes your file and keeps your exact words as the chapter text. Then it reads them and works out what a planned book would have had from the start: the scene-by-scene structure, the cast, the plot threads, a world bible. You end up with your book, and a map of it.
Key takeaways
- Import keeps your exact words as the chapter text. Nothing is re-written.
- From the prose it derives the structure: beats (one per story moment), the cast, plot threads, and a world bible.
- It takes EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, and plain text files, or a pasted manuscript.
- You can import a whole book, add more chapters to a book already there, or add a single chapter.
- Each extraction stage can be switched off, which lowers the cost, and a first import comes with a one-time credit gift.
What it does
What import does with your book
Keeps your words
The chapter text is your text. Import is not a rewrite and it does not generate replacement prose.
Maps the structure
Each chapter is broken into beats, one per story moment, so the book can be reviewed, checked, and continued scene by scene.
Finds the cast and the world
Characters, places, plot threads, and a world bible are drawn out of the prose. If you already have character sheets, load those first and skip that stage.
Lets you set the chapter breaks
Before anything is created you see where the chapters split, and you mark the prologue, the epilogue, and any front matter.
Adds, and only adds
New chapters land after the last existing one. Nothing already in the book is renumbered, replaced, or removed.
Works in batches
Still writing the book somewhere else? Bring it over a few chapters at a time into the same book, as often as you like.
How to use it
How an import runs
Choose where it goes
A new book, or a book you already have. This choice locks once the upload starts, so make it first.
Upload or paste
An EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, or plain text file, or the manuscript pasted in.
Check the chapter splits
Confirm where each chapter begins and set the role of anything that is not a main chapter.
Choose what to extract
Switch off the stages you do not need. The subtext layer is the most expensive one and the biggest saving if skipped.
Confirm the cost and import
You see the cost before it runs. Your first import comes with a one-time credit gift.
Example
What comes out the other side
You ask
A 24-chapter fantasy manuscript as a DOCX file, plus the character sheets the author already keeps.
You get back
- The character sheets are loaded first as bible entries, so the cast stage can be switched off.
- Twenty-four chapters appear in the book, each holding the author’s own text.
- Each chapter is broken into beats, and the beats are tagged to the characters from the sheets.
- Plot threads are traced across the book and a world bible is assembled from the prose.
An illustration with an invented book, to show what an import produces. The counts depend on your manuscript.
Questions
Frequently asked
- Can I import a novel I already wrote into Novelmint?
- Yes. Upload an EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, or plain text file, or paste the manuscript. Your words are kept exactly as the chapter text, and the structure - beats, cast, plot threads, a world bible - is worked out from them.
- Will the AI rewrite my prose?
- No. Import relays your words and does not generate replacement prose. Re-drafting a book from its outline is a different job that only happens if you ask for it.
- I am still writing the book. Can I bring it over in parts?
- Yes. Choose to add to a book you already have, and the new chapters are placed after its current last chapter. You can do that as many times as you like without ending up with several books of the same title. A single chapter can be added from the book’s chapter list without the full wizard.
- What happens to a book that is already published when I add chapters?
- The new chapters arrive unpublished. Readers do not see them until you publish them.
- What does an import cost?
- The extraction is the part that costs credits, and the cost is shown before it runs. Each stage can be switched off, and a first import comes with a one-time credit gift. Current amounts are on the pricing page.Pricing
- Does importing delete anything?
- No. Import only adds. It does not empty or overwrite an existing book, and existing chapters keep their numbers.
What this page does not claim
- Import does not improve your prose. It keeps it as written and maps it.
- The derived structure is a reading of your book and can be wrong in places. Beats, characters, and threads are all editable afterwards.
- Adding a single chapter does not retrace plot threads across the whole book. That pass belongs to the full import.
- A prologue, an epilogue, and front matter are kept as prose and are not broken into beats.
- The sample on this page uses an invented book.

What the map is for
Once a book has structure, the rest of the Studio can work on it: a developmental read, a continuity pass, new chapters written to match the old ones.
