Chapter 3: The Road to Veritas

The road to the Citadel of Veritas stretched across the mountains like a scar carved into the earth.

Karl Ardent rode in silence.

Cold wind swept through the rocky paths as the small caravan climbed higher into the hills. Armored riders of the Order surrounded him on all sides, their dark cloaks marked with the silver symbol of the watching eye and balanced scales.

The symbol of truth.

Karl stared at it with quiet bitterness.

Three days ago, that same symbol had stood in the courtyard of Ardent Manor and destroyed his life.

He tightened his grip on the reins.

The horse shifted beneath him as the road narrowed.

Ahead, the Justicar leading the escort rode without speaking, his cloak moving in the wind like a dark banner.

Karl’s thoughts drifted back to the moment he wished he could forget.

Ardent Manor – Three Nights Ago

The great hall had been filled with soldiers.

Karl remembered the sound of chains.

His father stood in the center of the room, surrounded by armored guards.

Yet Lord Marcus Ardent did not look defeated.

He stood tall, his voice calm.

“This accusation is false,” he said firmly.

The Justicar had only replied with cold certainty.

“The Order will determine that.”

Karl stepped forward then.

“You cannot take him!” he shouted.

Two soldiers grabbed his arms immediately.

His father turned toward him.

For a moment, the noise of the room seemed to fade.

“Karl,” his father said quietly.

There was no fear in his voice.

Only seriousness.

“You must listen carefully.”

Karl struggled against the guards.

“Father—”

“Truth does not fear judgment,” Lord Marcus said.

His eyes held Karl’s firmly.

“Find it.”

Then the soldiers pulled him away.

The heavy doors of the hall closed behind them.

And Karl never saw him again.

Present

Karl blinked as the memory faded.

The wind had grown colder.

The mountains around them were taller now, their peaks disappearing into mist.

One of the riders pointed ahead.

“We are close.”

Karl looked up.

At first he thought it was another mountain.

Then the clouds shifted.

And he saw it.

The Citadel of Veritas.

The fortress rose from the cliffs like something carved by giants.

Massive white stone walls towered over the mountain edge. Tall spires pierced the sky, each carrying the silver banner of the Order.

A huge bridge stretched across a deep ravine leading to the main gates.

Even from this distance Karl could see the enormous symbol of the Order carved into the fortress walls.

The watching eye above the scales.

A place built to judge the truth of the world.

Karl felt a strange mixture of anger and fear tightening in his chest.

This was the place that would decide the fate of his family.

The riders guided their horses across the stone bridge.

Below them the ravine dropped into darkness.

Two massive gates slowly opened.

The sound of grinding stone echoed across the mountains.

Inside the fortress, the courtyard was filled with movement.

Novices in grey robes crossed the stone paths carrying books and scrolls. Armored Justicars stood guard along the walls.

And in the center of the courtyard stood a massive statue.

A figure holding a sword pointed downward, with scales balanced perfectly above it.

The statue of Veritas.

The riders finally stopped.

The Justicar turned toward Karl.

“Welcome to the Citadel of Veritas.”

Karl slowly dismounted.

His boots touched the cold stone.

He looked up at the towering fortress walls.

This place would train him.

Test him.

And perhaps… reveal the truth about his father.

But Karl did not yet realize something important.

Somewhere inside this fortress…

Someone already knew the truth.

And they were waiting for him.
