Cara menulis novel petualangan

Updated August 18, 2026 · 8 menit baca

Adventure is the genre where geography does much of the structural work. Choose where the characters are going and what stands between them and it, and you have most of an outline already. This guide covers picking a destination, contesting the route, varying the obstacles, and keeping a long journey from feeling like one repeated scene.

Know what makes an adventure

Adventure is defined by motion toward something specific. There is a destination, the characters are trying to reach it, and the world between here and there does not cooperate. That premise carries a surprising amount of structure on its own, which is why the genre is forgiving of writers who dislike outlining.

It is worth separating adventure from the settings it usually wears. Fantasy is defined by an invented world and science fiction by a changed premise; adventure is defined by the journey, which is why it appears comfortably inside both. If your energy goes into where they are going rather than into what the world is, you are writing adventure.

Choose a destination worth reaching

The destination has to be concrete and it has to matter. A city, an object, a person, a border - something the reader can picture and the character can fail to reach. Vague goals produce vague books, because there is no clear moment at which the story has succeeded.

Then make the reason personal. Reaching the place should settle something for the protagonist beyond the plot: a debt, a claim, a question about themselves they have been carrying since chapter one. The destination is the structure; the reason is what makes anyone care about the structure.

Make the route argue back

A goal with nothing in its way is an itinerary. The route is where your plot actually lives, so treat it as an antagonist in its own right - one that is not trying to stop the characters personally, but stops them all the same.

Terrain, weather, distance, money, borders, other people's politics. Obstacles that arise from the world rather than from a villain tend to feel less contrived, and they scale naturally: the further they go, the less familiar the ground and the fewer the resources.

Vary the kind of trouble

The most common failure in the genre is not too little trouble but too much of the same kind. Three fights in a row read as one long fight, however different you make the opponents. The reader is not tracking the obstacles individually; they are tracking whether the book keeps asking them for the same response.

Rotate what each problem demands. One should require force, the next patience, the next a negotiation, the next a decision somebody will regret. Laying the route out as a sequence of beats makes the repetition obvious at a glance, long before a reader would have to sit through it.

Let the party change

A straight line stops feeling straight if the people walking it keep changing. Somebody joins at the third stop and turns out to want something else. Somebody who has been there since the first page does not make it past the sixth.

This also solves a quieter problem. A fixed cast on a long journey runs out of new things to say to each other by the midpoint, and the dialogue starts circling. New arrivals bring new friction, new information, and a reason for the established characters to explain themselves again in a way that does not read as recap.

Pick your subgenre

Adventure sits across a wide range of registers. Sword and sorcery keeps the stakes local and the pace quick. Survival fiction strips the resources away and makes the environment the antagonist. Military adventure trades on unit, objective and cost. Exploration stories run on the pull of the unmapped. Treasure hunts and heists give the destination a physical form.

Each carries a different promise about tone and about who is likely to die. Choose one and hold to its conventions; the genre's readers are unusually happy to reread a familiar shape done well.

Draft it, finish it, get it read

A finished adventure that keeps moving beats an elaborate world nobody travels through. Fix the destination, contest the route, vary the trouble, and let the journey cost something that is not physical.

Adventure also serializes better than almost anything else, because a journey comes pre-divided into stages. When the draft holds, publish it where adventure readers are looking and release it stage by stage. Setting the structure, drafting it in your own voice, and putting the chapters in front of readers who pay to keep going is what Novelmint is built for.

Questions

Frequently asked

Variasikan jenis rintangannya, bukan ukurannya.
Seberapa panjang seharusnya novel petualangan?
Biasanya 80.000 hingga 100.000 kata.

What this page does not claim
