Axel

He noticed the weight before she said anything about it. Not all at once; small observations, which he kept privately filing and did not act on.

Her clothes had started hanging differently. Nothing anyone who saw her once a week would have caught, but Axel saw her most days, and he knew her body the way he knew an engine he’d rebuilt from scratch, and something in it was running a half-degree hot.

This was a different tiredness than the ordinary kind, present on mornings when nothing had happened to explain it. More than once he caught her sitting mid-task, staring at nothing. The quiet between them, once easy, had begun to carry a new kind of attention—his, watchful; hers, carefully managed.

“You feeling okay?” he asked her, more than once, and got, more than once, the same easy deflection.

“I’m fine. Just tired. Getting old, apparently.”

“You’re forty-five, Georgia, not ninety.”

“Tell that to my body.”

He let it go each time, partly because he trusted her to know her own body, and partly because he did not want to push hard enough to hear the answer.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, dropping her at her house after an appointment she’d been vague about (“just a follow-up,” in the tone she used now for anything medical), that he found the parking stub.

It had fallen out of her bag onto the passenger seat of his truck, a small printed slip from the hospital’s main garage, not her regular doctor’s office building at all. He held it a long moment, turning it over once, twice, in his rough hands. The numbers on it were ordinary. The implication was not.

He did not ask her about it.

He told himself, putting it back exactly where he’d found it, that there were a dozen reasonable explanations. Specialists kept offices in main hospital buildings. Georgia was a private person who had earned, after a marriage built on things hidden from her, the right to keep her medical business to herself.

He believed most of that, driving home. What he could not talk himself out of, the rest of the evening, was the certainty that something was happening to Georgia that she had decided not to let him see.

He did not push. He told himself he was respecting her privacy. The respect sat in his chest like a stone he had chosen to carry rather than set down.
