Chapter 2: The Fall of House Ardent

The news spread through Valencrest like wildfire.

By nightfall, every tavern, market stall, and noble hall whispered the same words.

“House Ardent… accused of treason.”

Merchants leaned across tables exchanging rumors.

“They say Lord Ardent was plotting against the Crown.”

“Nonsense,” another replied. “The Ardents control half the western trade routes.”

A third man lowered his voice.

“The Order of Veritas is involved.”

That single statement silenced the table.

Because when the Order of Veritas accused someone, the entire world listened.

The Noble Quarter

Inside a richly decorated chamber across the city, several nobles sat around a long table.

Lord Cedrian Voss, a thin man with sharp eyes, smiled faintly as a servant delivered the news.

“So,” he said quietly, “it has finally happened.”

A younger noble frowned.

“You expected this?”

Voss leaned back in his chair.

“House Ardent grew too powerful. Wealth attracts enemies… and opportunities.”

“Do you believe the accusation?”

Voss chuckled.

“Belief has nothing to do with it.”

He looked toward the window overlooking the city.

“What matters is that the Order of Veritas believes it.”

The Merchant Guild

Across the city in the Grand Market Hall, merchants argued loudly.

“If the Ardents fall,” one said, “their trade fleets will be seized!”

“That will collapse half the western routes!”

A guild master spoke firmly.

“Or… it creates new opportunities.”

Many merchants fell silent.

Because the fall of a powerful house meant something very simple.

New wealth for those ready to take it.

Ardent Manor

Inside the once peaceful manor, chaos filled the halls.

Servants were being questioned.

Documents were seized.

Soldiers stood at every doorway.

Karl Ardent was forced to his knees in the main hall.

His father, Lord Marcus Ardent, stood nearby with his hands bound but his posture still proud.

A Justicar of the Order stepped forward.

His black cloak carried the symbol of Veritas stitched in silver.

“Karl Ardent,” the Justicar said.

Karl looked up with anger burning in his eyes.

“This is madness. My family has served the kingdom for generations.”

The Justicar studied him carefully.

“Perhaps.”

He unrolled another parchment.

“But evidence has been presented to the Order.”

Karl clenched his fists.

“What evidence?”

The Justicar did not answer.

Instead he turned toward Lord Marcus.

“You will be taken to the Citadel of Veritas to stand trial.”

A ripple of shock moved through the room.

Even Karl knew what that meant.

The Citadel was not just a court.

It was the highest authority of truth in the entire region.

Few who were taken there ever returned unchanged.

Karl suddenly stepped forward.

“This is a lie!” he shouted.

Two soldiers grabbed him immediately.

The Justicar watched him carefully.

“You speak with conviction.”

Karl struggled against the guards.

“Because I know my father is innocent!”

For a moment, the Justicar seemed to consider something.

Then he spoke calmly.

“There is a way for the truth to be revealed.”

Karl stopped struggling.

“What?”

The Justicar’s eyes hardened.

“You will come with us.”

Karl stared in confusion.

“As a Novice of the Order of Veritas.”

The words struck him like a hammer.

“Serve the Order,” the Justicar continued, “and you may one day uncover the truth behind your family’s accusation.”

Karl felt the world spinning around him.

Join the Order that had just destroyed his family?

But the Justicar spoke one final sentence.

“Refuse… and your family name will die with this accusation.”

Karl slowly looked toward his father.

Lord Marcus said nothing.

But his eyes told Karl something important.

Find the truth.

Karl swallowed the bitterness rising in his throat.

Then he spoke quietly.

“…I will join.”

And with those words, Karl Ardent unknowingly stepped into a world of secrets, power, and lies far greater than he had ever imagined.
