The ride back to the Marchetti estate is a blur of high-speed concrete and flashing streetlights. The three armored SUVs move in a tight, impenetrable caravan, cutting through the Chicago traffic like a dark blade. Inside our vehicle, the atmosphere has shifted from the frantic, high-stakes adrenaline of the penthouse to a heavy, suffocating silence.

Dante sits with his arm draped over the back of the leather seat, his fingers occasionally twining into the dark curls at the nape of my neck. He doesn't look at the passing city. He stares straight ahead, his jaw locked, his mind already calculating the logistics of the redrawn borders, the incoming tributes, and the new regime.

When we finally pull through the iron gates of the estate, the guards don't just salute—they bow their heads. Word travels fast in the underworld. They already know that the young Don didn't just survive the Commission; he broke it.

Dante guides me out of the SUV and straight up to the master suite. The moment the double doors shut behind us, the silence of the room wraps around us like a blanket. The fire has burned down to a pile of glowing orange coals, casting a warm, dim light across the dark velvet furnishings.

I walk over to the massive glass balcony doors, looking out over the manicured lawns stretching toward the dark, unseen expanse of the lake.

"You're still waiting for the war to come back," Dante’s voice rumbles from the shadows of the room.

I hear the rustle of fabric as he sheds his ruined charcoal jacket, tossing it onto a chair. His heavy footsteps approach, silent but felt through the vibration of the floorboards, until his massive chest presses against my back. He wraps his arms around my waist, pulling me back against him, his chin resting in the crook of my neck.

"I've spent my whole life waiting for the ceiling to collapse, Dante," I whisper, leaning back into his heat, my hands coming up to rest over his forearms. "My father’s debts, my sister’s flight, the Lucchesi soldiers... I don't know how to live in a house that isn't burning."

Dante shifts, his large hands sliding down to grip my hips, turning me around in his embrace until I am forced to look up into his amber eyes. The room is dark, but the flecks in his gaze burn with a fierce, steady intensity that cuts through my exhaustion.

"Then let me teach you," he murmurs, his baritone dropping into that low, gravelly rasp. "The fire outside is ours now, Gianna. We control the burn. You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore. Your perimeter ends where my men stand, and they stand everywhere."

He reaches out, his thumb catching a tear that I didn't even realize had slipped down my cheek. He wipes it away with a rough, heavy patience, his fingers lingering on my jawline.

"Tomorrow, the blueprints for the new bakeshop will be on your desk," he says, his jaw tightening as he looks down at me, a dark, possessive satisfaction settling into his features. "You’ll build it exactly how you want. But tonight, you forget the flour, you forget the ledgers, and you forget the Romano name."

He leans down, his lips brushing mine in a slow, deep kiss that carries no urgency—only the absolute, unyielding promise of a man who has conquered everything he ever set out to destroy.

"You're a Marchetti now, little baker," he whispers against my mouth, his grip tightening on my waist as he lifts me effortlessly toward the gray silk sheets. "And the city is going to spend the rest of its days learning what that means.”
