Emma Voss
Emma Voss is a dancer at Alderton Ballet Academy, where everything is measured in corrections, casting lists, and what your body can do on demand. She's precise, disciplined, and very good at performing fine. She's not fine. Emma narrates her own story with the kind of dry self-awareness that comes from having spent years learning to say the right thing in the right room — and only slowly figuring out that knowing the answer and being able to say the true one are two completely different skills. Off Beat is her reckoning with what it costs to hold yourself together, and what it takes to start letting go.

Priya Nair is the friend who already knows. Sharp, warm, and fluent in all of Emma's deflections, Priya has spent years learning when to push and when to just quietly put food in front of someone and say she bought too much. She's made a complicated peace with her place at Alderton Ballet Academy — not the principal track, and mostly okay with that — because Priya dances like she means it, and she knows the difference between that and dancing like you're trying to survive it. She's the one person Emma is almost honest with. That almost is the whole story.
