Publish from the place you wrote it
Last checked against the product October 1, 2026
A finished chapter sitting in a folder has no readers. In Novelmint the place you write is also the place you publish: the Commons, a public library where readers open chapter one for free and pay to unlock the rest. There is no file to export and upload somewhere else. A book goes live when it is presentable and you say so, and you can release it a chapter at a time while you are still writing it.
Key takeaways
- A book is published to the Commons, Novelmint’s public library, from the same Studio it was written in.
- To be listed, a book needs a real title, a cover, and at least one chapter of finished prose with a publishable rating. A pen name, a blurb, and a genre complete the listing.
- One finished chapter is enough. You can release the rest chapter by chapter as you write, or all at once when the book is done.
- Chapter one of every book is free to readers. Later chapters are unlocked, and the author keeps 70% of each unlock.
- Publishing happens only when you confirm it. You can unlist a book later.
What it does
What publishing involves
A readiness check
One check tells you what the book still needs before it can be listed, and what is recommended on top.
Help with the listing
Minty can draft a blurb or an author bio for you to approve, and a cover can be generated or uploaded.
A pen name
Every listed book is attributed to a pen name, and it becomes public when the book does. Set your own before you publish, or your display name is used.
Release at your pace
A serial goes out chapter by chapter. A finished book can be released whole, with a preview of what will go live before it does.
A rating on every chapter
Every chapter carries a content rating. In a bulk release each chapter is checked on the way out, and one the check is unsure about stays private until you have looked at it.
Your manuscript, always
You can download the book as a Markdown or Word file at any time.
How to use it
From finished chapter to live book
Finish a chapter
One chapter with finished prose is the minimum. A short story is publishable.
Check what is missing
Ask Minty whether the book is ready. You get a list of what is in place and what is not: title, cover, pen name, blurb, genre.
Fill the gaps
Write or approve a blurb, pick the genre, set a pen name, add a cover.
Confirm and publish
Publishing is a deliberate step. The book is listed when you say yes to it by name.
Release chapters
Publish chapters one at a time as a serial, or release a finished book in one go.
Example
A readiness check, read back
You ask
Is The Keeper’s Letters ready to publish?
You get back
- Ready: a cover is set, three chapters have finished prose, the genre is Gothic.
- Still to do: a blurb, and a pen name of your own.
- An offer to draft a blurb from the book for you to edit and approve.
- A reminder: publishing makes your pen name public, and I will ask you to confirm before the book is listed.

Questions
Frequently asked
- How do I publish a novel chapter by chapter?
- On Novelmint, publish the book once it has a real title, a cover, and one finished chapter, with a pen name, a blurb, and a genre to complete the listing. Then release each new chapter as you finish it. Chapter one is free to readers and later chapters are unlocked individually.
- Does the book have to be finished?
- No. One chapter of finished prose is enough to list a book, and a serial is released as it is written.
- How do authors get paid?
- Readers unlock chapters after the free first one, and the author keeps 70% of each unlock. The earnings calculator shows what that comes to at different readerships.Author earnings calculator
- Can I unpublish a book?
- Yes. A book can be unlisted. Your pen name stays public once it has been published under.
- Can every book be published?
- Not every one. A book rated Adult (18+) and a book declared as fan fiction can be written, edited, and exported, and cannot be listed in the Commons.
- Can I get my manuscript out again?
- Yes. You can download the book as a Markdown or Word file at any time. Novelmint does not publish to other stores for you.
What this page does not claim
- Publishing does not guarantee readers. It gives the book a home and a way to be paid, and the audience is yours to build.
- Novelmint does not publish your book to Amazon KDP or any other store.
- Listing a book is not the same as releasing every chapter. Chapters go live as you release them, and some may be held for your review.
- The sample on this page uses an invented book.

Before and after going live
A cover is the requirement authors most often have left to do. After that, the question is what readers bring in.
