Fix one scene without rebuilding the chapter

Last checked against the product October 1, 2026

A chapter rarely fails all at once. One scene runs flat, one line is wrong, one paragraph leans on a phrase too often. Because Novelmint keeps a chapter as beats - one story moment each - a revision can be as small as the problem. You edit the words yourself, re-render the one beat that missed, or run a clean-up pass on it, and the rest of the chapter stays as it was.

Key takeaways

  • Revision in Novelmint works at the level of the beat, one story moment, so a fix touches only the scene that needs it.
  • There are three routes: edit the prose by hand, re-render one beat after changing its plan, or run a clean-up pass on one beat.
  • A re-rendered beat is written to join the beats on either side of it.
  • The clean-up pass targets verbal tics, rhythm, and stock phrasing, and its result can be undone by re-rendering.
  • Re-rendering and the clean-up pass cost credits, a beat’s worth and not a chapter’s. Editing by hand costs nothing.

What it does

Three ways to change the prose

Edit it by hand

The prose editor shows the chapter beat by beat. Change the words directly and save. Your version is the one readers see.

Re-render one beat

When the scene itself is off - the tone, the pacing, a wrong detail - change the beat and render that beat again. The new passage replaces the old one.

Run the clean-up pass

A mechanical pass over one beat for repeated tics, lumpy rhythm, and stock phrases. It tightens the prose and leaves what happens alone.

Joined to its neighbors

A re-rendered beat is written against the beats before and after it, so the seam does not show.

Nothing lost

The clean-up pass saves its result as an edit you can recover from by re-rendering the beat.

How to use it

Choosing the right fix

01

Read the built chapter

Open the chapter’s prose and find the beat that is not working.

02

A wording problem? Edit by hand

For a line or a paragraph, type the change in the prose editor. It is the fastest route and it is free.

03

A scene problem? Change the beat

If the scene is doing the wrong thing, fix the beat it was written from, then render that beat again.

04

A texture problem? Clean it up

If the scene is right and the prose is baggy, run the clean-up pass on that beat.

05

Read across the seams

Read the beat with the ones on either side. For a rewrite that spans most of a chapter, rebuild the chapter.

Example

One beat, revised

You ask

Beat 4 has Joss too friendly. He should be guarded here, he does not trust her yet.

You get back

  1. The beat’s plan is updated: Joss is wary, answers in short sentences, and keeps the table between them.
  2. An estimate for rendering that one beat, and a question: go ahead?
  3. On your yes, beat 4 is rendered again and written to join beats 3 and 5.
  4. Beats 1 to 3 and 5 onward are untouched.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I revise prose an AI wrote?
In Novelmint you have three routes. Edit the words by hand in the prose editor. Change the plan for one beat and re-render it. Or run a clean-up pass on a beat to remove tics and stock phrasing. Each one is scoped to a single story moment, so the rest of the chapter is left alone.
Do I have to regenerate the whole chapter to change one scene?
No. A chapter is kept as beats, and one beat can be rendered again without touching the others. The new passage is written to join the beats on either side.
Can I just tell the AI to "make it darker"?
Not as a free-text instruction on the render. You change what the prose is written from: the beat, the character’s bible entry, or the voice profile. Then you render again. The change lives in the plan, where the next chapter can read it too.
What does the clean-up pass change?
It is a mechanical pass on one beat for repeated verbal tics, uneven rhythm, and stock phrases. It does not change what happens in the scene. Its result can be undone by re-rendering the beat.
What does revising cost?
Editing by hand is free. Re-rendering a beat and the clean-up pass cost credits, priced for one beat and so far less than rebuilding a chapter. Current credit prices are on the pricing page.Pricing

What this page does not claim

  • These tools do not replace your own read of the chapter. They change what you point them at.
  • The clean-up pass is mechanical. It does not judge whether a scene works.
  • For a rewrite that changes most of a chapter, a rebuild is the better tool than many single-beat renders.
  • The sample on this page uses an invented story. It is not output from a real book.

Where revision fits

Revision starts from a built chapter. When a fix would change what happens later in the book, a continuity pass tells you what else it touched.
