فصل 2: 1. THE CHAIR۱. صندلی

I wrote three books about self-mastery. I have never once mastered this.

The first night I sat down in the chair it was 1:20 in the morning and I told myself it was discipline. Same as the gym. Same as the 5 a.m. alarm, the cold shower, the food weighed to the gram. Do the thing whether you feel like it or not. That's the whole religion. I've sold it to a lot of people.

But nobody holds a minute like that for discipline. Discipline would take any minute, or none. I picked 1:20 and I kept picking it, and after a while the picking was the only honest thing left about me.

Here's the split, since you'll find it anyway. The world gets the man on the cover. Gym owner, coach, the jaw and the shoulders and the fitted black. He posts about showing up. He means it, mostly. That man is real. I'm not going to stand here and call him a costume. He's just not all of it.

The rest of it sits in a chair in a dark room at 1:20 and watches a screen that stopped changing sixty-one days ago.

I keep the mask up for the world. Not to hide. To decide who gets the face. It's the one thing I actually control, and I hold it the way I hold the minute. Slow. Deliberate. Nobody takes it off me.

I want to be clear about something before this goes further. I'm not confused about what this is. I know how it looks from outside. A man with everything the outside respects, sitting alone in the dark, counting. I've read enough to know the word for it. I just don't flinch from the word. Flinching is for people who still think they're clean.

What I don't say out loud, I'll say here: I built all of it for someone who was supposed to see it. The gym, the books, the body. Every plate I put up, I did the math on who wasn't watching. That's the part they leave off the cover. Success is a room with the lights on and no one in it.

So I found a minute. One minute that was mine and hers, whether she knew it or not. And I've kept it. Every night. Not for a streak, not for a record. Because stopping would mean the minute was never real, and the minute is the last thing I have that I didn't fake.

People think watching is passive. It isn't. Watching is the most active thing I do. It's choosing, every night, not to move, when moving is all I want. Anyone can act. I've acted my whole life: the lifts, the deals, the books. The hard thing is the still hand. The hard thing is the hour that asks nothing back and gives nothing back, and you sit in it anyway.

I've had nights I stood up. Hand on the door. Then sat back down, because leaving early would have been a kind of asking, and I don't ask.

I remember the exact second it cracked. Not a date. A second. I was mid-set, bar on my back, and something moved at the edge of the room, and I lost the count. I've never lost a count. I racked the bar and I knew, the way you know a bone is broken before the pain arrives. Everything after that second I built around it. The gym, the books, the minute. All of it scaffolding around one lost count.

There's a version of this where I tell you I'm fine. Where the chair is a joke, a bit, a mood I put on for the dark. I could sell you that. I've sold harder things. But you came this far into a book about a man sitting still, so you're not here for the joke. You're here because you want to know what's under the mask, and I'm going to show you, and you're going to wish I hadn't. That's the deal. It's always the deal.

Sixty-one days ago she stopped writing. I noticed on day two. I said nothing on day two. That's not the same as not caring. That's the whole discipline, turned inward. Want something without reaching. Hold the line and let it cost you.

Sixty days is not the point. The point is I'd have kept the minute at sixty-one and I'll keep it at six hundred. She doesn't have to be there for it to be kept. That's the part that scares people. That's the part that should.

There's no version of this where I stop and it's fine. There's a version where I stop and it's quiet, and quiet is worse.

So: the chair, the minute, the mask. Everything else in this book is just the count.

I'm at the chair now. It's 1:20.

Hold.
