The grand staircase of the foundry descends straight into the heart of the main floor, and as Dante’s hand settles firmly into the curve of my lower back, the sea of tailored suits and silk dresses parts instantly.

The silence that follows us down isn't just polite; it is heavy with the realization that the hierarchy of Chicago has officially been rewritten.

At the bottom of the steps stands Deputy Mayor Vance, a man who just three weeks ago was rumored to be signing off on the zoning restrictions meant to suffocate my family's old bakery on 4th Street. Today, his face is a mask of sweating, desperate sycophancy. He holds a crystal flute of champagne, his eyes darting from the fresh crimson rose pinned to Dante’s lapel to the massive diamond ring on my finger.

"Don Marchetti. Donna Marchetti," Vance stammered, bowing his head just low enough to acknowledge the absolute authority standing before him. "The transformation of this pier is... spectacular. A true triumph for the city's North Avenue development."

Dante doesn't offer his hand. He doesn't even look at the man. He simply towers over him, his amber eyes flat and lethal, a silent reminder that Vance’s career—and his freedom—rests entirely on the ledger pages currently locked in our vault.

"The development is exactly what I dictated it would be, Vance," Dante says, his deep baritone cutting through the ambient noise of the room like a razor. "See to it that the transport permits for the southern docks are cleared by tomorrow morning. My wife doesn't like her shipments of Sicilian fruit delayed by paperwork."

"Of course, of course. By nine AM, personally," Vance says quickly, backing away into the crowd before he can swallow any more of his own terror.

A low, dark chuckle vibrates through Dante’s chest as he guides me past the marble display cases, where hundreds of pristine, golden pastries glisten under the warmth of the imported Italian chandeliers. The scent of caramelized sugar and fresh espresso is thick, masking the cold reality of the armed guards standing at every exit.

"He was trembling," I whisper, looking up at Dante as we reach the private tasting alcove at the back of the foundry, shielded from the crowd by a wall of frosted glass.

"He knows his price, Gianna," Dante murmurs, turning his massive frame toward me, completely blocking out the rest of the room. He reaches out, his large, calloused hand catching the lapel of my midnight-blue silk blouse, pulling me forward until my chest is pressed flush against the rigid line of his tuxedo. "And he knows what happens to men who fail to deliver to a Marchetti."

His amber eyes darken, the fiery flecks in his gaze burning down into mine with an intensity that leaves my knees weak. His thumb finds the sensitive skin of my throat, his grip possessive, his pulse echoing the frantic, heavy beat of my own heart.

"You built a beautiful cage, little baker," he whispers, his voice dropping into that terrifying, intoxicating purr that has completely become my anchor. "The whole city is inside it now. And no one is breaking out of our perimeter."

He leans down, his lips catching mine in a bruising, demanding kiss that tastes of sweet sugar and dangerous victory, sealing my fate to his while the empire we built watches from beyond the glass.
