The foundations went in faster than I expected. Stone is heavy and the ground was hard, but the hands were many, and many hands with a shared purpose move faster than the purpose warrants, because the moving is part of the belief. I watched them carry stone from the ridge and set it into the trenches Dani had marked, and the setting was rhythmic and almost musical, and the rhythm was the rhythm of a thing becoming real. The seat's foundation went in first. Before the shelters. Before the communal hall. Before the food stores and the water channels and the walls that would eventually surround the complex. The seat first. I noticed this. I do not think anyone else did, because the ordering was Maretti's, and Maretti's orderings had the quality of weather: they arrived, they were accommodated, and nobody thought to question whether the weather could have been different. I have been thinking about the space between a task and a title. They are not the same thing, though they begin as one. A person carries water. That is a task. The task is performed repeatedly. The repetition becomes a role. The role is named. The name becomes a title. And the title outlives the task, because titles do not depend on water being carried. They depend on the structure that required the carrying. The community was seventy now. The number had significance beyond its arithmetic. Seventy people required systems that fifty did not. Fifty could be managed by one voice, one fire, one daily circuit of the camp. Seventy could not. Seventy produced problems at a rate that outpaced any single person's capacity to solve them, and the outpacing produced the thing Birdie had been watching form since the settlement: a structure that existed because the alternative…
