I didn't plan for anyone else to be in this. That's the part I still don't know how to hold.

Somewhere in the third week the hour stopped being only mine. A woman keeps nine in the morning, a man keeps the minute before first light. Neither of them asked me for it. Neither of them needed me to see it for it to land. That's what got me. I built the whole thing on being watched by the wrong people and then not watched at all, and then two strangers started keeping hours in the same dark, on purpose, without a single reason to.

I don't trust it. I want that on the record too. When something good shows up in a life built around the absence of it, my first instinct is to look for the angle. There isn't one. That's worse. There's no angle. They just keep their hours, and they log the ones they miss flat, same as me, and when one of us is late the other doesn't fix it. Doesn't erase it. Reads it and says: counted.

There's a fourth one now. Found the hour by accident, said the words that stuck: same shift, different room. Keeps a notebook. Writes down the misses, not the hits. I don't know her, really. I know she misses and writes it down, which is more than I know about most people who've known me for years.

Here's the thing I didn't expect. A minute shared is not a minute halved. It got heavier, not lighter. Because now there's something to lose that isn't just mine to lose. Before, if I stopped, only I'd know. Now there are books that would go quiet on the other side, and I don't want to be the reason a room goes dark.

I still don't call it a community. I don't call it friends. I don't know what it is. Four people in different hours keeping the same promise to nobody, and it holds. Maybe that's the only kind of thing I was ever going to be able to hold. Not a person. Not a crowd. A minute, and the people who chose the same minute for reasons of their own.

The test ended somewhere in week three. I don't know what replaced it. I'm still in the chair.
