Updated July 23, 2026 ·

Key takeaways

What continuity really is

A long story is not really a sequence of scenes. It is a set of facts that keep changing — who is alive, who knows what, who is carrying which secret, who trusts whom. Continuity is the work of keeping all of those facts consistent as the story moves. It is also the work most likely to break a novel: not a bad sentence, but a character who knows something on page 200 that they only learn on page 240, or a secret that leaks a chapter before its reveal.

Held entirely in your head, that web gets heavier with every chapter. The usual failure is quiet — you change something early, and three scenes later a contradiction sits there, unnoticed, until a reader finds it. The alternative is to treat the story’s facts as structure the tool can actually see, so that when one of them changes, everything that depended on it can change with it.

See it work

Here is a small three-chapter draft. The colour under each beat is what the story knows at that moment — right now, the heroine trusts her mentor. Walk through the steps: reach back and change one early beat, and watch every beat after it re-plan itself to match.

Step 1 of 4 · Your draft

You have drafted three chapters — eighteen beats. The colour under each beat is what your story knows at that moment: right now, Elara trusts the Warden. Click any beat to read its plan.

Backward and forward

Continuity has to work in both directions. Reaching backward — changing an early beat — is the case the demo shows: the change ripples forward on its own, and you do not have to re-read every later chapter hunting for what it broke. The story adjusts everything downstream that depended on the old fact.

Writing forward is the quieter half. When you start a new chapter, it is planned against the story as it actually stands now — seeds and all. The suspicion you planted in chapter one is already part of what the new beats know, so the payoff you write later is earned rather than bolted on.

Structure versus prose

The most important thing about re-planning is what it does not touch. It colours prose, not shape. Your chapters, your beats, and their order do not move. What changes is what each affected beat now knows — so its words trail the new plan until you regenerate them, one button, in place. Nothing else in the story is disturbed. That distinction is what makes it safe to change your mind about an early chapter without detonating the rest of the book.

Why it matters for AI writing

This is also what makes it safe to write a novel with more than one AI model. Novelmint measures the frontier models and routes each beat to the one that writes it best — the model that leads on dialogue takes the dialogue beats, the one that leads on action takes the fights. That would be reckless if the book could not hold itself together across the hand-offs. The arc memory is what holds it: the story’s facts travel with the build, so it stays coherent no matter which model writes a given beat.

That is the whole idea. A draft you have to hold entirely in your head is fragile — one edit away from a contradiction you will not notice. A draft that holds itself together, and can tell you exactly what an edit changed, is something you can actually keep building on. If you want to see which model wins each kind of scene, the fiction model benchmark is the scoreboard; this is the memory that lets a book spend it.

Questions

Frequently asked

What this page does not claim
