Chapter 1: The Carefree Noble

The city of Valencrest glittered beneath the afternoon sun.

Tall white towers rose above the crowded streets, their banners fluttering in the wind. Merchants shouted across the marketplaces, horses clattered along the stone roads, and nobles moved through the upper terraces of the city dressed in silk and velvet.

At the highest point of Valencrest stood Ardent Manor, the home of one of the richest noble families in the kingdom.

And on the wide balcony of that manor stood Karl Ardent.

Karl leaned lazily against the stone railing, watching the city below with little interest. A half-finished glass of wine rested in his hand.

“Another council meeting?” Karl muttered.

Behind him, servants moved through the hall preparing for yet another gathering of nobles and merchants. His father loved such meetings—talks about trade, taxes, and alliances.

Karl, however, found them painfully dull.

At only nineteen, Karl had grown used to a life most people could only dream of. Fine clothes, expensive feasts, hunting trips in the royal forests, and nights filled with music and laughter.

Responsibility was something he had successfully avoided.

Footsteps echoed behind him.

“You should at least pretend to care.”

Karl turned to see his older sister Elena Ardent standing in the doorway, arms folded.

Karl smiled casually.

“I do care,” he said. “I care very much about finishing this wine.”

Elena sighed.

“Father is speaking with the royal magistrates. You know what that means.”

Karl shrugged.

“More taxes. More trade agreements. More speeches.”

But Elena did not smile.

Her expression remained tense.

“Karl… they didn’t come for trade.”

Karl frowned slightly.

Before he could ask what she meant, a loud sound echoed through the courtyard below.

The heavy gates of Ardent Manor burst open.

Armored soldiers poured inside.

Steel boots struck the stone ground as they marched forward in formation.

At their center rode a man wearing a dark cloak bearing a symbol known across every kingdom—

A pair of balanced scales beneath a watching eye.

The emblem of the Order of Veritas.

Karl felt the first ripple of unease in his chest.

“Why…” he murmured.

Below them, the soldiers spread across the courtyard.

Then a voice rang out, loud and cold.

“By authority of the Crown and the Order of Veritas…”

The man unrolled a parchment.

“Lord Marcus Ardent is hereby accused of treason and conspiracy against the kingdom.”

Karl froze.

The words echoed in the courtyard like thunder.

“…and all members of House Ardent are to be detained until the truth of this matter is revealed.”

The glass slipped from Karl’s hand.

It shattered against the stone floor.

And in that moment, his carefree life ended.
