SUPPORT

After dinner, Elise opened the privacy-request link.

The form was fourteen screens long.

Identity verification.

Email verification.

Region.

Request type.

Data access or deletion.

Specific products.

Reason for request.

She selected DELETE PERSONALIZED LIQUIDITY PROFILE.

The option did not exist.

She selected OTHER.

A text box appeared.

She typed:

I want SellNow to stop analyzing old listing images and connected data to identify possessions I have not chosen to sell. I want any inferred household inventory and liquidity profile deleted.

The form asked:

Would you also like to delete your account?

Yes.

A warning appeared.

Deleting your account will remove active listings, buyer reputation, sale history and eligibility for certain protections. Deletion may take up to 30 days. Some information may be retained as required by law or for legitimate business purposes.

Elise clicked CONTINUE.

One more screen.

Before you go, tell us what went wrong.

She laughed.

The app wanted feedback.

She typed:

You looked at my life and called it inventory.

Then she pressed SUBMIT.

A confirmation appeared.

WE'RE SORRY TO SEE YOU GO.

For thirty seconds she felt better.

Then an email arrived.

SUBJECT: A SPECIAL OFFER BEFORE YOU LEAVE

She deleted it without opening it.

At nine, Benji spread his geography assignment across the kitchen table. Emma needed a signature on a reading log. Mark packed lunches.

Nobody mentioned money for nearly an hour.

At ten-oh-six, when both children were finally in bed, Elise returned to her phone.

The SellNow app was still there.

Deletion pending.

She held the icon until it shook.

Remove App?

Yes.

The icon disappeared.

The kitchen did not change.

The toaster remained.

The kettle remained.

The lamp the software had mistaken for mid-century amber remained.

The purple jacket hung by the door.

The bike waited in the garage.

Thirty dollars had become groceries.

Nothing miraculous had happened.

There were still bills.

There was still Monday.

There was still the strange arithmetic of a family in which two adults could work continuously and nevertheless spend Tuesday measuring the distance between necessities.

Mark sat beside her.

"Did you delete it?"

"I requested deletion."

"That sounds different."

"It is."

He took out his phone.

"Should I delete mine?"

"Do you have an account?"

"I downloaded it when we sold the stroller."

Elise stared at him.

"What?"

"I forgot."

"Open it."

He did.

His HOME VALUE tab showed $1,043.

They looked at each other.

"Why is yours higher?" Elise said.

"Because I own better stuff."

"You own three socket sets."

"Quality socket sets."

They both started laughing.

It was tired laughter, the kind that lived one floor below despair but refused to move out.

Mark opened his categories.

Tools — $416.

Electronics — $208.

Outdoor — $189.

Household — $230.

"It wants the compressor," he said.

"Does it want the children?"

"No category for them."

"Interesting."

"Maybe because I don't buy their coats."

The joke stopped being funny.

They sat quietly.

The system had built different pictures of the same house from different adults.

Elise's profile had seen children's clothing, school devices and kitchen appliances.

Mark's had seen tools, electronics and outdoor gear.

Neither profile had seen the family.

Only assets adjacent to a person.

Only objects attached to patterns.

Only possible liquidity.

Mark deleted his account too.

"We're rich," he said, putting down the phone.

"Apparently."

"Over a thousand dollars sitting around."

"Should we sell the couch?"

"Depends. Are we using it?"

"Sentimental."

He smiled.

Then he looked serious.

"You know we'd sell stuff if we had to."

"I know."

"The bike too."

"I know."

"Anything."

"I know."

That was the part the app had gotten right.

Everything had a price under enough pressure.

The mistake was believing price was the same as value.
