BACKGROUND

On Thursday morning, Elise woke before her alarm.

For several seconds she did not remember SellNow.

Then she did.

She checked her email.

No offers.

No liquidity reminders.

No suggestions.

Only the school newsletter, a work notice and a digital receipt for last night's groceries.

She looked at the receipt differently now.

Apples.

Milk.

Tortillas.

Twenty-one dollars and eighty-seven cents.

Data, if someone wanted it to be.

Breakfast, if you lived in the house.

At 6:51 Emma came downstairs wearing the purple jacket because she had forgotten to take it off after going to the garage.

"Can I have waffles?"

"We don't have waffles."

"Can we make pancakes?"

"On a Thursday?"

"Thursday is basically Friday."

Benji entered behind her.

"That's not how days work."

"It is emotionally."

Elise laughed.

"Fine. Pancakes."

They had pancake mix.

Enough milk now.

She heated the pan.

Mark found syrup in the back of the pantry.

While the children argued about whether Thursday was emotionally Friday, Elise reached for her phone.

The kitchen looked good in the morning light.

Not magazine good.

Not listing good.

There were backpacks on the floor and a lunch bag open on the counter. Mark's drill sat beside the fruit bowl because he had fixed a hinge and forgotten to put it away. The toaster needed wiping. Emma's jacket was draped over the chair. Benji's tablet charged beside the microwave.

Everything SellNow might have boxed in blue or yellow.

A photograph full of available inventory.

She lifted the phone.

"Smile," she said.

The children complained because children always complained when asked to smile.

Mark held up the spatula like a sword.

Emma made rabbit ears behind Benji's head.

Elise took the picture.

For a second her thumb hovered over the share icon.

Then she locked the phone.

The picture did not need to go anywhere.

It did not need to become content.

It did not need to prove engagement, gratitude, family closeness or domestic competence.

Nothing in the background needed a price.

At 7:46 they rushed out the door.

Emma forgot her water bottle.

Benji forgot the geography sheet.

Mark had to circle back because his lunch was still in the fridge.

The morning remained inefficient.

At 8:12 Elise sat in the school drop-off line watching red brake lights stretch toward the intersection.

Her bank balance was sixteen dollars and seventy-three cents.

Payday was four days away.

Nothing about deleting an app had changed the arithmetic.

She still might sell something else.

She was not above selling things.

She was not above asking for help.

She was not above choosing rent over pride or groceries over sentiment.

That was not the lesson.

The lesson was smaller.

She wanted to be the person who chose.

Not a prediction.

Not a score.

Not a machine that saw the edge of a winter coat in a reflection and decided desperation was a sales opportunity.

The car ahead moved.

Elise drove forward.

At the curb, Emma opened the door.

Her purple jacket caught briefly on the seat belt.

"Wait," Elise said.

Emma stopped.

Elise freed the fabric and smoothed the little tear near the pocket.

"There."

"Thanks."

Emma jumped out.

Benji followed.

They ran toward the school.

In the rearview mirror, the purple coat became smaller until it disappeared through the doors.

Eighteen dollars, SellNow had estimated.

Maybe twenty-two on a good day.

Elise smiled.

The app had been wrong by more than she could calculate.
