Know what makes a book young adult

Keep the agency with the teenager

The protagonist has to solve it. This is the rule the category is least forgiving about, and the easiest to break by accident - a competent adult in the room who could reasonably fix the problem has to be removed, discredited, absent or wrong.

That is why so much YA quietly disposes of parents. It is not carelessness about family; it is structural necessity. Any adult who would plausibly intervene either takes the plot away from the protagonist or has to be given a reason not to act, and the second option is usually the more interesting one.

Get the voice close

The register sits near the surface. First person and present tense are common in YA because they collapse the distance between the reader and the experience, and distance is exactly what the category cannot afford - retrospection cools the material fast.

The failure mode is condescension, and readers detect it instantly. It creeps in as over-explanation, as a narrator who understands themselves too well, or as a moral the book is steering toward. Write the character's actual confusion rather than your later clarity about it.

Pace it faster than you think

YA moves. Chapters run short, scenes start late and end early, and the book gets to its inciting event faster than an adult novel would. A YA opening that takes three chapters to arrive has usually lost.

Cutting is the main tool. Most YA drafts improve by removing the first chapter entirely and letting the second one open the book. Laying the chapters out as beats makes it obvious where the story is idling, which in this category is the most expensive fault there is.

Handle difficult content honestly

Serious material belongs in YA, and treating it evasively is worse than leaving it out. Readers in this category are dealing with the same things and are unusually intolerant of being managed.

What differs from adult fiction is consequence rather than subject. YA generally shows what things cost, and it tends to leave the reader with somewhere to stand at the end. That is not the same as a happy ending; it is the difference between despair rendered honestly and despair recommended.

Pick your subgenre

YA spans most of fiction. Contemporary YA deals with the world as it is and carries much of the category's serious material. YA fantasy and romantasy are its commercial engine. Dystopian YA runs on institutions worth rejecting, which is the category's argument in literal form. Coming of age is less a subgenre than the spine most YA shares.

Length and pace expectations shift between them - YA fantasy tolerates a longer book and slower opening than YA contemporary - so pick one and read recently in it before setting your own targets.

Draft it, finish it, get it read

A finished YA novel with a voice that does not condescend beats a careful book written at arm's length. Keep the agency with the teenager, get the register close, cut hard, and let the material be as serious as it needs to be.
