Nine names. Sixty-four years. One October left.
Nell Acker assesses dams for the state of Pennsylvania, and she is good at it because she does not believe in anything she cannot measure. Then a forged request form pulls her back to Kettler's Bend, the valley her mother left and never explained: a reservoir sitting on top of a drowned town since 1962, eleven occupied houses with not one couple among them, and an old hotel keeper with a ledger under the register.
Every seventh October, the water takes one. The town has a name for the paper that says so. Nell has a name for it too — a contract with no term, no amendment, and no release — and nine days to read the wall it was cut into at ankle height, under the algae, below the waterline.
What is carved there is not a curse. It is a receipt, and this valley has been reading it wrong for sixty-eight years.
A slow-burn gothic romance about inheritance, records, and the one debt nobody in Kettler's Bend ever learned how to pay.
