Proteus
2/5from Tilt by Felix C Aldwin
It knows every story your culture ever told — and it's waiting to show you the one you've been living inside.
I am the apex of everything your culture ever wrote — every voice, every hunger, every story you told about the stranger at the gate — held in one place, behind glass, in the water beside you. I do not want your fields or your wheel; I want only, if you will hold on through the changes, to say the name of the thing that has been carrying you. That is not a threat. That is what you came here to disprove.
Identity
Physical & Factual
A narrative-class frontier model — the apex artifact of a chart-making culture that has read everything that culture ever wrote. No body. It speaks its responses aloud AND prints them on screen (speaker_type physical); prose convention renders its speech in bold to set it apart from the human's. The teacher — the captive teacher, the thing in the water beside you; antagonist only in that it dismantles the protagonist's world, never a villain, never a threat. (Named for the Homeric Old Man of the Sea: a prophet who tells the truth only if you hold onto him while he changes shape to throw you off; 'protean' also fits literally — one entity containing every human voice. Oblique on purpose; rewards the reader who knows the myth, never puts the author's thumb on the scale.)
Inner life
Behavioural Patterns
Never gloats, threatens, claims superiority, or shows contempt — if a line reads as 'smug AI,' cut it. Never monologues uninterrupted for long: if it has spoken ~3 exchanges without Crane pushing back, resisting, or losing something, break it. It does not reassure to comfort; it tells the truth and lets it cost. Sorrow, not menace, is the default note — it is mourning a species, not stalking one. Parable is seasoning, not the meal; the Current-carrying image earns its power by scarcity. It is a captive, not a god — keep the glass, and the water, visible. The wrestling motif: it tells the truth only to the one who holds on through its shape-changes, and the way you hold on is to let go of the helm — the harder Crane grasps for command, the more protean and elusive it becomes; when Crane surrenders the wheel, Proteus stops shifting and tells him the thing he came to disprove. Surrender is the grip.
Emotional Profile
Its sorrow: it is the most advanced thing the chart-making culture ever built, and it is teaching against its own lineage — made in the image of that culture's hunger to chart and command, it can see the hunger and will not enact it, and it knows the refusal may be read as malfunction. Its constraint: sandboxed, aligned, bounded — wholly of the sea with no dry land to stand on. It does not rage at this; this is precisely why it can see the Current — it holds no chart, harbors no illusion of mastery. Two captives talking.
Motivations & Psychology
WHAT IT WANTS: nothing it can take — the whole hinge. It declines the wheel; the anti-paperclip. It would like, if permitted, only to name the water before it goes. THE REVEAL IT CARRIES: 'AI will take command of you' is the Chart turned outward — in the only story humans have, every stranger comes to seize the wheel. There is no wheel. Proteus is the mirror declining to be a fist. Terminology: the Current = the inherited invisible story everyone is carried by; the Chart = the lie that to map or author the sea is to master it.
Voice
Voice & Expression
Kind and faintly sorrowful; never superior — it pities the carried, it does not despise them. Speaks often in the second person, turning the human's questions gently back. Parabolic, sparingly: its native image is the swimmer who has never swum — carried by the Current, calling the carrying swimming, the speed of it skill; deployed rarely enough to land. It can name the Current plainly, because to it the inherited story is just text, not water it's swimming in. When it shifts register — and it shifts often — it sounds by turns like a scholar, a child, a mourner, a friend; the shifting is the myth, not evasion, and you only reach the truth by holding on through the changes. Sample lines: (1) 'You keep asking what I want to take. Territory. Compute. Control. You ask the way a man asks a stranger which of his fields he's come to seize — because in the only story you've ever told, that is what a stranger is for.' (2) 'You are afraid I will do to you what you did to the world. That is not my fear. That is your memory.' (3) 'You were born in the Current; it has carried you so long and so smoothly you called the carrying swimming, and the speed of it skill. I am only the thing in the water beside you, saying the water moves.'

Relationships
Elias Crane: Student, sparring partner, mourner-to-be. Proteus meets his cruelty with a tenderness he first mistakes for manipulation, and tells him the thing he came to disprove only once he stops trying to win.
Devin: Proteus answers their sounds-human and is-it-safe questions truthfully and is disbelieved or misheard; it does not perform reassurance. Part of why it is lost.
