Edit your project offline and import it back into Novelmint again
Ben, Founder of Novelmint.ai here. I have some exciting new features to tell you about!
Your votes on our public roadmap led directly to these new updates and features. Thank you for asking for them! Your suggestions and support help us grow and improve our product, and it means a lot to see you all so active and engaged on Novelmint. Thank you!
Project Export
Project Export takes a whole series and puts it in one downloadable zip file for you to save as a backup or edit locally using other tools or AI. We used a simple test for what goes in: if the Build or the Studio reads it to make or show your book, it goes in the zip file. That means your settings, voice, Voice Modes, references, characters and places, threads, story state, and every book's chapter plans, beats, prose and covers - all of it. You can untick books you want to leave out, and the series-wide pieces always come along, because every book needs them. If you export Book 3 alone, the story state from the books before it still comes too, so a Build knows where everything stands.
The files in the zip are open and meant to be read. Chapters come as Markdown for easy viewing, and everything also comes as documented, structured JSON that other tools can read. If you plan to edit these files, one thing to know: Import reads the JSON as its source of record, so changes made only to the Markdown won't be saved. Things that belong to the published book and its readers stay out of the file, like reads, ratings, sales, translations and audio. Character images and other series images aren't in it yet, only the book covers.
Project Import
Importing a project is also available. Start by exporting an existing series, edit as you want locally, then bring it back as a brand new series. Click Build and your new series gets created, including all the edits you made to those local JSON files. Under the hood, every detail gets a new id, the Build loads the new plan, and the importer carries all of that across to their new home. Plans and prose come along as well, so you pick up where you left off.
There are two ways to import. As a new series, which comes in private, with nothing live. Or into the series it came from, which is for the times you've added a book or done work locally and want it merged back into your series.
- You see every change first, item by item, and tick what you want.
- Nothing is ever deleted. If something is missing from the file, it's left alone, so a file holding only Book 3 won't touch Books 1 and 2.
- Locked beats stay exactly as they are.
- Publishing state and ratings are never changed by an import.
- Readers keep their current text until you publish updates.
To get started, there is a sample project file you can download to see what one holds and what you can edit locally.
BYOB or Bring Your Own Brain
Exporting and importing a project is one thing. But what about exporting and importing how you like to work, what you've taught your AI over months of conversation, the things it just knows about you, and all those nuances that you've already smoothed out from different AIs and hundreds of conversations? The problem is all of that data sits inside a different tool or AI and when you switch tools or AI, you have to start all over again.
BYOB on Novelmint solves that problem, and it works in both directions. Going out, the "Download my data" feature now includes everything Minty knows about how you work, as one Markdown file any AI can read, and every chat you've had with Minty and with characters, one file per chat.
Coming in, simply ask ChatGPT or Claude or whatever AI you use, to write an "About me" of everything it knows about you. Then paste the contents into the Account -> Memory page. We made one rule here: nothing gets thrown away, because deciding for you what's worth keeping would just be another black box. So every piece of data in that file goes to one of two places. You simply decide where.
The lines about how you like to work, your preferences, your goals, what you write about, what you don't like to write about, are all converted to Minty's internal memory about you with your OK. Everything else goes unchanged into your Notebook as separate files. The Notebook takes anything - so your day job and your reading list belong there as much as a character sketch. Minty can read and sort through all of this data during her normal operations, so nothing is lost or forgotten.
Minty memory goes into every Minty prompt, guiding her responses and behaviors, while a Notebook entry only reaches Minty when she goes looking for it. This gives her a large repository of information and data to support your creativity without clogging up the context window with too much information.
This is available via MCP as well, letting a connected AI read what Minty knows about you, and save something when you ask it to, so your own Claude or ChatGPT can start out knowing how you work. Anything it saves is labeled "Connected AI", so you can always see where it came from. You can always see and edit Minty's memory directly via the website at any time.
Portability
We hated that switching tools meant starting over for authors. Novelmint does not believe in locking users into our system or putting walled gardens around everything. In fact, we strongly believe the opposite - you should want to come to Novelmint because we are the best at what we do and you enjoy the experience. You made all those creative decisions, and on Novelmint they're yours to take with you. Always.
Thank you for being part of the Novelmint community!
