Chapter 35: CHAPTER 34

The heavy iron doors of the old North Avenue foundry groan as they swing inward, the sound echoing through a cavernous space that feels less like a bakery and more like a cathedral of steel and brick.

Sunlight pours through the massive, arched industrial windows, cutting through the lingering dust motes and illuminating the expansive concrete floor. It smells of old iron, river mist, and the faint, sweet promise of something new. In the center of the main floor stand three colossal brick ovens, their dark mouths open, imported straight from the heart of Naples.

Dante steps into the space behind me, his massive presence instantly filling the void. He doesn't look at the architecture. His amber eyes are fixed entirely on me, tracking the expression on my face as I take in the sheer scale of the kingdom he has built for me.

"The security team has already installed the localized grid," Leo says, stepping inside and gesturing toward the discreet black cameras nestled in the iron rafters above. "The glass is reinforced ballistic polymer. The back docks are entirely under Marchetti control. No one approaches from the water without tripping the perimeter."

"Leave us, Leo," Dante commands, his baritone a low, flat rumble that brooks no argument.

"Understood, boss." Leo bows his head and retreats, the heavy iron doors clicking shut behind him, sealing the two of us inside the vast, sunlit foundry.

The silence that settles between us is thick, heavy, and charged with the same electric intensity that has bound us together since the night the lights went out in the cathedral. I walk forward, my leather boots clicking softly against the concrete, until I reach the edge of the massive marble pastry slab in the center of the kitchen. I place my hands flat against the smooth, cold stone, looking out at the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan through the glass.

"It's perfect, Dante," I whisper, my voice catching slightly. "It's everything I ever dreamed of, back when I was just sweeping flour off the floor on 4th Street."

Dante crosses the floor with a slow, predatory grace, his footsteps silent until he steps up directly behind me. He doesn't touch me immediately. He simply hovers, his massive frame blocking out the light, enveloping me in his shadow and the intoxicating scent of cedarwood and dark success.

"You aren't that girl anymore, Gianna," he murmurs, his hot breath brushing against the dark curls at the nape of my neck.

He reaches out, his large, calloused hands settling onto my hips, his fingers digging into the fabric of my trench coat with a heavy, possessive pressure that anchors me back against his chest. I lean into his heat, my eyes closing as a violent, familiar shiver ripples straight down my spine.

"The Romano family wanted a sacrifice to keep their ledger clean," Dante whispers, his voice dropping into that dark, razor-sharp purr that completely dictates my reality. He slides his hands up from my hips, tracing the curve of my waist until his palms rest flat against my ribs, feeling the erratic, frantic thud of my heart. "But I didn't take a sacrifice. I took a queen."

He turns me around in his arms, forcing me to look up into the fiery depths of his amber gaze. The tiny pale scar through his left eyebrow twitches, his jaw setting into a handsome, unyielding sheet of marble as he looks down at my parted lips.

He lifts my left hand between us, his thumb rubbing a slow, heavy circle over the massive diamond ring that seals my fate.

"The city is ours, little baker," Dante promises, his eyes burning with a fierce, lethal satisfaction that leaves me breathless. "The old guard is broken, the borders are drawn, and my name is branded into every brick of this town. But this empire means nothing if you aren't sitting at the head of the table next to me."

He leans down, his lips catching mine in a slow, deep, and utterly demanding kiss—a final, absolute declaration of victory that tastes of fire and forever, sealing my perimeter completely within his arms while the city burns quietly.
