Chapter 51: CHAPTER 50

The industrial rumble of North Avenue is entirely absent here, replaced by the steady, rhythmic wash of the lake against the private stone seawall of the Marchetti estate.

Six months have passed since the winter fog cleared, and the fortress we built has settled into a quiet, heavily guarded peace. The perimeter hasn't shrunk—it has simply become impenetrable.

I stand on the master suite balcony, the warm June breeze rustling the sheer linen curtains behind me. The ivory silk blouses of the winter have been replaced by a soft, flowing sundress that drapes over the undeniable, heavy curve of my stomach. My hands rest over the bump, feeling the strong, sudden kick of the life growing inside. A boy. A Marchetti heir who will never know the dust of 4th Street, only the luxury of the empire his parents carved out of the ashes.

"He’s active today," a deep, gravelly baritone rumbles from the bedroom.

I don't need to turn around to feel the shift in the air. Dante steps out onto the balcony, his massive frame instantly blocking the midday sun, casting his familiar, protective shadow over me. He has discarded his suit jacket, his white linen shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the heavy ink and scarred sinew of his forearms.

He steps up directly behind me, wrapping his large, warm arms around my waist. His calloused hands slide down to cover mine, his long fingers splaying wide across the high curve of my belly.

The moment his palms press against the fabric, the frantic kicking inside calms, as if the baby already recognizes the absolute authority of his father.

"He knows your touch," I whisper, leaning my head back against Dante’s broad chest, inhaling the scent of crisp ozone and expensive tobacco.

"He knows who commands this house, Gianna," Dante murmurs against the shell of my ear, his hot breath sending a violent, delicious shiver straight down my spine. A low, fiercely possessive purr rattles deep in his chest. "Just like his mother does."

He turns me slowly in his embrace, his thumb catching my chin to tilt my face up. The tiny pale scar through his left eyebrow twitches, his amber eyes burning down into mine with a heavy, unyielding warmth that has only intensified with every passing month. He tracks the flush on my cheeks, his features hardening into that handsome sheet of marble that signals pure, unchecked satisfaction.

"Leo just finished the audit on the summer transport lines," Dante says softly, his thumb tracing the sharp line of my jaw before settling on the pulse point at my throat. "The Western sectors tried to query the surplus grain storage. One call from my security captain, and they authorized the transfer without a single note. They remember the tax you set in the frost, little baker. They’re still crawling."

"Let them crawl," I breathe, my fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt, my square-cut diamond glinting brilliantly in the summer light. "We have everything we need right here."

Dante’s gaze drops to my lips, heavy-lidded and intensely dominant. He pulls me flush against his hard torso, the solid weight of his body a permanent shield against the rest of the world.

"We do," he whispers, his voice dropping into that razor-sharp register of absolute devotion. "The city can burn outside these gates, Gianna. But inside this perimeter, you and my son are untouchable."

He leans down, his mouth capturing mine in a deep, slow, and utterly consuming kiss that tastes of sweet victory and a dangerous, beautiful forever—a final seal on the legacy we built, and the family that will rule it.
