Chapter 4: The Novices of Veritas

Chapter 4: The Novices of Veritas

The gates of the Citadel closed behind Karl with a deep, echoing sound.

For a moment he simply stood in the courtyard, staring at the massive fortress surrounding him. The walls seemed impossibly tall, the towers rising into the cold mountain mist like silent watchers.

Everywhere he looked, members of the Order moved with purpose.

Grey-robed novices carried stacks of books through stone corridors. Armored Justicars walked across the courtyard like silent guardians. Even the air seemed different here—quiet, disciplined, and heavy with authority.

Karl felt suddenly out of place.

Three days ago he had lived in luxury.

Now he stood inside the most powerful religious order in the region as a forced recruit.

“Move.”

The voice came from the Justicar who had escorted him.

Karl followed as the man walked toward a long stone building along the inner wall of the courtyard.

“This is the Hall of Novices,” the Justicar said. “All new recruits begin here.”

They entered through heavy wooden doors.

Inside, the hall was vast and simple. Long wooden tables filled the room, and dozens of young men and women wearing plain grey robes sat studying scrolls or speaking quietly.

Karl immediately felt the eyes of the room turn toward him.

Some curious.

Some suspicious.

Some clearly recognizing him.

Whispers spread quickly.

“Is that him?”

“The Ardent heir?”

“The traitor’s son?”

Karl clenched his jaw.

The Justicar ignored the whispers and approached a tall man standing near the far end of the hall.

The man wore dark robes trimmed with silver—the mark of a Seeker.

His sharp grey eyes studied Karl carefully.

“This is him?” the Seeker asked.

“Yes,” the Justicar replied. “Karl Ardent.”

The Seeker raised an eyebrow slightly.

“So the rumors are true.”

Karl stared back at him.

“My father is innocent.”

The Seeker didn’t react to the statement.

Instead he stepped closer.

“My name is Seeker Aldren Vale,” he said calmly. “I oversee the training of Novices in this hall.”

He circled Karl slowly, examining him as if measuring something unseen.

“You will begin as Novice Initiate, the lowest level of the Order.”

Karl crossed his arms.

“I didn’t exactly volunteer.”

A faint smile appeared on Aldren’s face.

“Few people who arrive here do.”

The Seeker gestured toward the rows of novices.

“In this place, titles mean nothing. Noble blood means nothing.”

His voice grew colder.

“The only thing that matters here is truth.”

Karl said nothing.

After a moment, Aldren turned toward a group sitting at one of the tables.

“You will sit with them.”

Karl walked toward the table reluctantly.

Three other novices sat there.

A broad-shouldered boy with messy brown hair looked up first.

“Well,” he said with a grin, “this should make things interesting.”

Across from him sat a quiet girl reading a thick book. She briefly glanced up at Karl before returning to her page.

The third novice leaned back in his chair with clear amusement in his eyes.

“So,” he said casually, “the famous Karl Ardent joins the Order.”

Karl sat down slowly.

“Do I know you?”

The boy smiled slightly.

“No.”

Then his expression darkened.

“But my family knows yours.”

For a moment, the tension at the table grew heavy.

Before Karl could respond, Seeker Aldren’s voice echoed across the hall.

“Listen carefully!”

The entire room went silent.

“You are now servants of the Order of Veritas.”

He looked across the novices slowly.

“Some of you came here willingly.”

His gaze briefly rested on Karl.

“Some did not.”

Aldren continued.

“But every one of you will learn the same lesson.”

He pointed toward the enormous stone doors at the far end of the hall.

“Inside this Citadel lies the truth of kingdoms, rulers, and noble houses.”

His voice lowered.

“And sometimes… the truth is far more dangerous than lies.”

Karl felt a strange chill run down his spine.

Because for the first time since arriving at the Citadel…

He wondered something he had never considered before.

What if the truth about his family…

Was worse than the accusation?
