Chapter 4: The Knight of the Kingdom

By the age of twenty, Kael's name had begun to travel beyond the walls of the capital.

He was no longer known as the boy Aldric had found alone in the streets.

He was now known as one of Aurelia's finest young warriors.

Kael rode through the capital on horseback, wearing the silver-and-blue armor of the royal knights.

People moved aside as he passed.

Some bowed.

Others whispered his name.

"That's Kael."

"The young knight."

"I heard he defeated six men during the northern raid."

"He's Aldric's finest warrior."

Kael heard the whispers but paid little attention to them.

Fame had never been what he wanted.

He simply wanted to protect people.

That was what Aldric had taught him.

One afternoon, Kael returned to the fortress after completing a patrol outside the capital.

He dismounted and handed his horse to one of the stable boys.

"Take care of him."

"Yes, Sir Kael."

Kael walked toward the main hall.

Before he could enter, a familiar voice stopped him.

"You've become popular."

Kael turned.

Varick, the Left-Hand Knight, stood nearby.

He wore dark armor, with a long sword hanging at his side.

As one of the kingdom's highest-ranking knights, Varick held great authority. Only Aldric stood above him.

Kael respected him.

"Commander."

Varick smiled.

"You don't need to look so serious every time you see me."

Kael gave a small smile.

"I was taught to respect my commanders."

Varick laughed.

"Your father taught you well."

Kael's expression softened slightly at the word.

Father.

He rarely heard anyone call Aldric that.

But Varick had known Aldric for many years.

They had fought in the same battles.

Served the same king.

And stood among Aurelia's greatest warriors.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

"Come," Varick said. "The King wants to see you."

Kael followed him into the fortress.

The royal court was gathered inside the great hall.

At the far end sat the King.

Nobles stood along both sides of the chamber.

Aldric stood near the throne.

When Kael entered, his eyes immediately met Aldric's.

Kael bowed.

"Your Majesty."

The King nodded.

"Kael."

Kael stood straight and waited.

"You have served Aurelia well."

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

The King rose from his throne.

"There are many knights in this kingdom who are strong."

He looked around the hall.

"But strength alone does not make a knight."

His eyes returned to Kael.

"Today, I recognize your service, your courage, and your loyalty."

The hall became silent.

"You have earned your place among the kingdom's finest."

Kael bowed his head.

"I will continue to serve."

Aldric watched proudly.

For him, this was more than the rise of a great young knight.

It was the moment the boy he had rescued years ago had finally become the man he had always hoped he would become.

That evening, Kael left the fortress alone.

He rode through the capital without an escort.

The sun was beginning to disappear beyond the distant hills.

He slowed his horse near the marketplace.

People were closing their shops.

Children were running through the streets.

Merchants were packing away their goods.

Kael smiled.

This was the kind of life he had once dreamed of protecting.

Then something caught his attention.

A small shop stood near the edge of the market.

It wasn't particularly large, but it was well kept.

A simple wooden sign hung above the entrance.

Inside, a young woman was carefully counting coins while speaking with a customer.

Kael's horse slowed.

For some reason, he looked toward the shop a second time.

The young woman glanced outside.

Their eyes met.

Only for a moment.

Neither of them looked away immediately.

Then the woman returned to her work.

Kael continued riding.

He did not know her name.

She did not know his.

Neither of them knew that this brief moment would become the beginning of something that would change both of their lives.

For now, it was only a glance.

But their paths would cross again.

And when they did, neither of them would remain the same.
