A half-century family epic set in a village in northern mainland China, tracing how generations of villagers rose and fell with the tides of their times, through the fortunes of land, clan, survival, and fate. A realist ensemble novel, with no cheat powers, no time travel, no rebirth.

This is a traditional novel written in the language of web-novel page-turners.

The half-century after the founding of the People's Republic saw the most fundamental reform of the land system in more than two thousand years of Chinese history.

On the banks of the old Yellow River channel, a village called 青石原 rose and fell, lived and endured, through fifty years of historical tides.

In 1952, thirty-year-old Zhao Dehou climbed the old watchtower and watched the stream flow past the village, wasted. He resolved to dig a canal. Young and old together, over three years, dug two canals out of the earth one spadeful at a time. The water came through, the fields came alive, and the people came alive with them.

Over the next fifty years came the production teams, the Great Leap Forward, the famine, the Cultural Revolution, the household responsibility system, the wave of migrant labor... The tides of the age surged in again and again, and 青石原 rose and fell with them. The ancestral hall's doors were smashed open and shut again; the lamp in the watchtower lit up and went dark; the young ones left and came home.

The novel centers on a dozen or so characters, each following a life path of their own.

Fifty years on, the canals still run, the fields are still sown, and the grass before the ancestral hall grows tall, is cleared, and grows tall again. The hemp rope atop the watchtower, flap, flap, has beaten against the wind for a lifetime.

This is not a story about heroes. It is a story about the land.
