The Listener

Dark Fantasy

He fell from the sky. She was already here.

Hul is a fallen angel with no memory of why he was cast from the heavens. Birdie is an ancient air elemental whose empathic gift lets her feel what every living thing carries. When she finds him in the crater of his own arrival, broken and sealed and looking at stars he cannot reach, she makes a choice she cannot undo: she stays.

Invisible to everyone but Hul, Birdie becomes his unseen advantage among the mortals who begin to gather. She reads their emotions. She whispers what she feels. And the world mistakes her intelligence for his divinity.

Then a true believer arrives. A man whose conviction has no cracks, no doubts, no friction her gift can detect. He offers to speak for Hul. Hul, tired of questions he cannot answer, accepts.

That single sentence will change the world.

But Birdie heard it first, and she said almost nothing, and the almost is the space this story lives in.
